I am not sure what happened to make the few reviews before mine be so poor. I have now been to the Story Inn twice. Last year my husband and I went with another couple during the Victorian Candlelight Christmas. The meal was so delicious --the fillet--that we decided to go again this year. While the boys had been drooling having the fillet again (waiting a year for it), alas it was not to be. The fillet was not on the menu. This year, we started with the crab cakes. I’m not sure if they were made from canned crab, but whatever kind of crab it was, the cakes were wonderful! Firm but tender, full of flavor, and not a hint of fishy-ness. I had the pork (delish), my girlfriend had the scallops (superb), and the boys had the prime rib (not their favorite cut of meat. They said it was the best prime rib they had ever had. Our server Susan was wonderful. Our drinks were never empty, the courses were brought at the perfect times, and Susan gave the perfect amount of attention, without being overbearing. The meal was… perfect from start to finish.
Last year I was disappointed in the entire breakfast experience. Our server was kind of cold and not very attentive, and it took about an hour and a half for the breakfast to be served. My food was cold and kind of tasteless, but my girlfriend said her omelet was great! This year the breakfast was wonderful! Our server Miriam was, again, perfectly attentive. Our coffees never got cold, and our water glasses never ran dry. Miriam was warm and friendly, and made us feel very welcome. All of us had the breakfast sandwich, which was awesome. While it did take a while for the food to be served, it was served hot, and it tasted just as good as it looked. The mayo had a nice spice to it, the veggies were fresh, and the eggs were not over or underdone.
The rooms were the same as last year: clean and comfortable. There were no signs of mold in the old building. The rooms were dust-free even though the building is very rustic. You can hear everything that goes on downstairs, but if you turn on the heater it does a nice job of drowning out the sounds.
The Story Inn is kind of in the middle of nowhere, with no tv or wi-fi, which is perfect if you want to just enjoy the serenity of the hillside. The main town of Nashville is about 25 minutes away, and it has some neat little shops to entertain you during the day. The bar at the Story Inn is open until about 10:00 p.m. or so on the weekend, and it provides evening entertainment –chatting with the bartenders and the locals.
We plan on making the Victorian Candlelight Christmas an annual trip. I would recommend it to everyone-just leave 2 rooms available for us.
