“Not like it used to be...”

Our family has been enjoying the Abe Martin Lodge every January for 24 years. Each year gets a little more disappointing. First, out-of-state cars MUST pay a $7.00 state park entrance fee EVEN if you have a hotel confirmation in your hand. The food at the lodge was not good; hamburgers, chicken marinara. Very few of the hot breakfast buffet items were hot...scary! The scrambled eggs were over-cooked, the fried potatoes were dried-out. Time for a new chef!! Most of the bathtub faucets in our rooms were extremely hard to turn and the shower nozzle was almost impossible to lift, we finally did, so we left it UP. The once-loved game room prices increased this year with a poor selection of winning prizes. Each grandchild had $20.00 to spend so we took our $180.00 and drove into town for other choices. Finally, the new pool/water slide...the kids and grandchildren love it...but the Sunday night (1-29-12) we were there, there were only 2 pool workers. Whether they took it upon themselves or the management, they CLOSED THE WATER SLIDE at 9:00 PM and several other times during the afternoon. When I asked why, the young pool boy said, "TO FOLD TOWELS OR WE WILL GET FIRED!" I told him we rented 7 rooms @ $100.00 per night=$700.00... to have the slide close early? He promptly reopened the slide...5 minutes later. We think the employees close the pool to do their side work of folding towels to get "out-of-here" promptly at 10:00 pm. Can you imagine Red Lobster closing early so the servers can 'roll their silver' for the next day? We are seriously re-thinking next years choice of hotel. The Millers.

Room Tip: Choose a room in the newer building, the rooms are bigger and the bathroom sink is outside the bathr...

“Hotel experience? Reasonable. Back to Nature? Fabulous.”

I think that if you purchase a break at a State park, then you clearly have at least a little clue of what to expect. If you whine about the lack of Internet, phone signal, broken DVD player, or a "tube TV" (I found that comment laughable) then you have completely missed the point. This is a state park. The reason that the Lodge is there at all is because of the beautiful location.
Go for a walk, become aquainted with how it was before colour T.V. travel back in time to when entertainment was not sitting in front of a screen pushing buttons and the best playground is the great outdoors. So it rains? put on a coat and sensible footwear and get out there. Get muddy. Fall over. Forget the phone.
There is history everywhere. Even in the woods. You can find caves, mills, lime kilns (once extremely important). Man-made water-ways, trails galore. Bird feeding stations (better than T.V.) and at one park, a Gemini capsule that has been beyond the Earth!
And you complain that it is a "tube T.V"? all I can say is that is a great shame.
If you come for the lodge itself, rather than the main attraction (Outside. remember?) then you find comfort rather than cutting edge technology. Others have described the Lodges better than I have. Remember than even much more expensive Hotels have "bad" rooms too. Sometimes Staff may be short. They will fix it if you ask. Also, before you complain too loudly, ask yourself if the public would approve of all it might see in your work-place?
The free coffee is great. Food not the best, but certainly not the worst either. At Abe Martin I was given to try, some kind of sugary dough-nut type biscuit with apple butter. It was fabulous. They did not have to do that, but it was very appreciated. Thank-you.
We stayed in January, in one of the outdoor Lodges, with a real log fire. Fire was not cleared from the previous occupants, but no big-deal. They fixed it easily enough. To watch the woodpeckers at work, and to walk the trails (it was freezing!) was almost worth the price itself. Climb the fire tower, this feels an awful lot higher looking down than looking up!
Very close by is the nature centre. Watching the many birds is a real treat.
I think we were fairly lucky inasmuch as there were not many others on the park, but either way, there is no reason whatsoever to be bored. Now, if only they had that flat screened T.V..........

“good when on sale”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 January 2012

This hotel was nice since i paid 1/2 price. The pool was always OVERCROWDED but nice. However, it was very inconveniently closed 15min out of every hour. The property was also severely short on QUIET SITTING AREAS. Not a bad place when on sale...but I would be disappointing if I paid full-price. GREAT COFFEE available 24hours!

“Overall, Enjoyed the Stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 December 2011

Not for everyone. We stayed in the lodge. The decor and fixtures are dated, particularly the bathrooms. It could be a little cleaner, and the staff seemed to be composed entirely of teenagers. Service was spotty. The food at the restaurant was lousy; go elsewhere to eat. The fact that it's a state-run facility was often obvious.
Still, we had a good time. The setting is lovely; out in the woods of a big state park. There are a couple nice common rooms with big fireplaces. The "waterpark" was great, quite large, and much newer than the rest of the lodge. Great for families. Beds comfortable; room size adequate. Wi-fi worked fine.
So if you want a nice escape, with swimming and hiking, consider it. If you want nightlife and ready access to other entertainment, not so much.
Of note: Alcohol is not sold anywhere in the park, including the lodge's restaurant, and it's a good ways from town. So if you want a glass of wine in the evening, you'll have to bring your own.

“From an annual visitor”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 December 2011

I stay at the Abe Martin Lodge in Brown County State Park almost every fall. I usually stay in one of the rustic cabins, which are not for everyone. There is no TV or telephone in the cabin rooms, but they have recently put microwaves and refrigerators in them. My Verizon cellphone has service in the cabins, in the inn, and in the park. The cabins are not winterized and are not available between November and March. I enjoy Indiana's state park inns, but one needs to know want to expect to avoid being disappointed. Since they are located within sate parks, there is an entry fee (charged once) and they are not accessable from main highways. They are older buildings with interesting histories. They are not sterile and modern, but I have found them to be clean and comfortable. A recently added feature of the Abe Martin Lodge is the indoor water park, which makes it a great place for families with children. There is a slide, lazy river, and splash pad as well as a spa and pool. The theme of Abe Martin and his friends, cartoon characters, are carried out throughout the lodge and cabins. Brown County State Park has a nature center, hiking trails, and spectacular views, especially in the Fall. I have found the meals in the dining room to be OK.
