“great place, great time”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 September 2010

Went to the Blue Door Cottages a few weekends ago and had a fantastic time. A very cool, relaxing place. Great cabins, decorated with a nice IKEA type feel to them. (surprised to see some reviews say the place wasn't clean, as our cabin was amazingly clean) My 4-year old son and I had a fantastic time with his friends and their families. The boys played all over the area...and in the great swimming pool! and we were super close to Indiana Beach Amusement Park.

Being from Chicago I wanted to get out of the city and relax with my son. I was new to the Lake Shafer/Monticello area but it is an easy drive from the city and I was able to load up on food/bev for the weekend at a nearby WalMart.

The evenings around the campfire made me nostalgic for the campfires of my youth, and the lake is beautiful as well ...and I had a great time skipping stones right across the street from Blue Door.

Wonderful place to stay and I look forward to going again.

“Beautiful, large and modern clean cottages and fun for all ages...we'll be back!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 September 2010

Living in Chicago and with 20 years in the interior design business, I have tolerated many midwest inns, condos and cottages that don't appeal to my aesthetics. Blue Door is wonderfully unique as they combine a hip, cool, urban vibe to their cottages that is so refreshing. No silly knick knacks and pointless frills, the cottages are clean and tastefully designed in a warm, modern scandinavian vibe. We all had a blast: ages 4 to 46 yrs..
The place was spotless when we arrived, we had everything we needed and bugs stay out when you keep the doors closed (as with all places).

The kids ran around and around and around, playing games on the grass, hanging out at the pool and roasting marshmallows. We visited the nearby Railway Museum and rented a pontoon boat for lots of outdoors fun. The owners couldn't have been nicer nor more helpful. This is a genuine family owned business and you can feel the warmth, pride and hard work they put into it. We watched interrupt grilling their dinner to clean out a cottage Saturday night to accommodate a last minute rental.

Would we go back? Well, of course! There is no better place to stay near Monticello and Lake Shafer is directly across the street. We hope they start to do pontoon boat rentals at their docks right there for next year!

“Fabulous family vacation spot.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 September 2010

I stayed at Blue Door Cottages the weekend after Labor Day. It was a girl's family weekend away from Chicago, so 5 family members in total. We stayed in the Big Cabana. We brought enough food for the whole weekend, and had plenty of kitchen space to prepare our meals. The cottage was air conditioned, but we rarely had it on with all the open windows. There are two very pleasant sleeping alcoves- I was lucky to have one of them with a king size bed. It was such a wonderful relaxing weekend, we didn't leave the cottage except to go for a few lovely walks down the nearby quiet roads. We played games and had plenty of cozy space in the living room and had a huge kitchen table for meals and game playing. I also went for a long run in the area, which is a luxury coming from the congestion of Chicago. I would highly recommend staying at Blue Door cottages, and we plan on coming back again.

“Best Place on the Lake”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 August 2010

My husband and I brought our 5 mo.-old daughter here for our very first family vacation. We had a great stay. The staff was friendly and very helpful with directions and recommendations for restaurants/things to do. Our studio was very nice and pleasantly decorated. I did kill a couple of bugs in the bathroom, but nothing unusual for a lakeside cabin. The linens and kitchenette were completely clean. The kitchen was surprisingly well-appointed with: fridge, sink, microwave, toaster, coffee maker, plates - large and small, bowls, utensils, glasses, mugs, wine glasses, cutting board, strainer, large serving bowl, dish drying rack, dish towel, dish soap, scrubber, paper towels, etc. We brought a bunch of stuff that we didn't need b/c it was already provided.

The property is conveniently located to all Lake Shafer has to offer, and the restaurant across the street was the perfect place to relax by the lake with a beer or to have a meal. (Loved the fish sandwich.) There are grills and fire pits available outside the cottages, as well as games like horsehoes and cornhole that you can borrow. They also lend movies and board games for those rainy days. You can access the lake for relaxing/fishing or boat docking via the restaurant across the street, which is part of the resort property. We're already planning to come back next summer with extended family members to take advantage of those amenities.

“Don't look here for service or a clean property, inside or out.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 August 2010

We chose this property because it had been had been recently updated. The website it in fact is very lovely and the cabins are painted cute. The layout of the cabins were functionable as well, however, that's where anything positive can be said. The kitchens were dirty, all of the refridgerators froze everything, my refridgerator was filthy I had to ask the manager to have someone cleaned it, the floors were covered with bugs, there were bugs on the bedding. The pricing was reasonable but for that I had expected the rooms to be serviced each day. They were not. Not once in four (4) days. We were by a lake, we didn't bring our own towels, we were expected to wash our own towels, empty the trash, clean the room before our departure. I tried several times to call the owner prior to our arrival, (we live in Colorado) and could never get a return call. Not good business. If these people expect this business to stay open some major changes need to happen. I know our family won't be returning.

Although we are certainly not perfect, we have worked incredibly hard to build a reputation as the newest, nicest, cleanest resort in the Lake Shafer/Monticello area, therefore, I feel like a response is justified for these reviews…
1. There was a small liquid spill in the refrigerator that was admittedly missed during our manager’s final walk through of the cottage. When the guest brought it to his attention he immediately went out and wiped it up himself. Although we regret this wasn’t caught earlier, it hardly justifies the description of filthy.
2. Our refrigerators, like every other refrigerator, has temperature control on it that can be turned up or down if it is too cold for it’s contents.
3. One of the great benefits of our location is that we are on a lake, in a heavily wooded area and are open during the summer. As much as we wish we had the power to control Mother Nature, it is reasonable to expect that a guest may encounter a bug. Our cottages are all brand new construction and tightly sealed, but as the doors are opened and closed, an outdoor bug may find their way inside. We don’t believe the answer is in covering the property in dangerous pesticides that could harm our guests, potentially affect their breathing, and kill off everything beautiful and living on the property. We believe it’s more reasonable to expect to encounter a bug on a lake in the summer. We provide bug spray for free in our guest laundry area for the use of our guests. We also take pest control measures that are organic and would not harm our guests.
4. We are a small lakefront resort that is a collection of individual cabins. Our cabins offer about twice the size and amenity of a standard hotel room, for a similar price, but that doesn’t include a daily maid. It clearly states that on our website. Guests are renting a cabin, not a hotel room.
5. We do not expect guests to clean their rooms prior to departure or do their laundry. We do provide laundry facilities for guests that have a longer stay or might want to them. Each of our cottages is professionally cleaned after each guest checks out, and all linens are provided.
6. Our business phone number is clearly listed on the website and all invoices, and our manager answers each and every call that comes in. I am not sure why this guest chose to call a private out-of-state cell phone number to ask questions when they are readily available by calling our business anytime.

In conclusion, we try to give each an every guest a memory of time spent enjoying their families that they will take with them over the year. Most of our guests visit year after year, and some of them multiple times per summer. The truth is, there are people in the world that will let minutia like a frozen piece of fruit or a bug ruin their family’s vacation, and to those people…we wish them well and hope they find peace in the world.
