I am both deeply frustrated and angry at Marriott and the Residence Inn-Mishawaka over their failure to honor the Exclusively Yours Prepaid American Express cards. I receive award points for performance from my employer. These points can be converted to prepaid AMEX Exclusively Yours cards. Marriott Hotels advertises in the AMEX EC listings that these cards are accepted at all Marriott Hotels within the US. Residence Inns are specifically named by Marriott in the AMEXC EC listings as accepting these cards for payment without any qualification,
On the basis of these representations, my husband and I chose the Residence Inn, Mishawaka for a two day stay over Christmas to visit my brother. We would not ordinarily have chosen to stay at a hotel this expensive but I had AMEX EC cards to cover most of the cost.
On check in I advised the desk clerk about these cards and was told that nothing needed to be done, just present them at check out.
When I presented them at checkout they were refused. My husband and I spent 1/2 hour while the desk staff telephoned Marriott and tried to get the cards honored. I was then told that the desk staff would have to call AMEX, get a new AMEX vendor number and call Marriott back to get approval and the cards might then be accepted. At this point, we were already late for a family gathering so we chose to leave the entire bill on my credit card.
Marriott induced us to stay at a Marriott and to spend more than we would have by representing that the AMEX EC cards would be accepted without any qualification. Marriott and the Residence Inn - Mishawaka then refused to accept the cards without any explanation - although the desk clerk did apologize, that hardly begins to cover it.
We expect a refund of our money for at least one night based on the extra expense we incurred due to Marriott's misrepresentation about these cards. We have made this report and complaint to Marriott Corporate and have also reported this to Exclusively Yours AMEX and (here) on TripAdvisor so that others will know that Marriott does not honor its commitments.
