This hotel is conveniently located to I-80 at the Kennedy Ave. Exit and is part of a three-hotel complex of Marriott brands. This is the biggest and the best of the three (which includes a Courtyard and a Fairfield Suites, all next to each other. If you have the luxury of making a choice between the three, you should choose this one.
I grew up in Hammond, which for a long, long time really didn't have a decent hotel nearby. Now there is one. While the decor is nothing fancy and the hotel isn't quite as plush as some other Residence Inns I've stayed at (I even worked at one in the late '80s), it is still a very good place to stay.
I used Priceline and got a great deal for a Saturday night stay. The hotel was about half full so there wasn't a crowd at the pool and the breakfast wasn't packed.
For a Saturday night stay, there wasn't a rowdy clientele which can sometimes plague these hotels in this area.
As an extended stay hotel, the room is large (like all Residence Inns). I like the extra space and all the items in the kitchen, which is full sized with fridge and the like.
The TV was flat screen and large but it was older and not an HDTV. It had LodgeNet so there were plenty of moving and gaming options (the TV comes with its own console, so you can play video games).
The bed was a bit firmer than the latest craze of soft beds in the hotel marketplace these days. I like it soft but my fiancee likes the more firm beds. But the sheets and comforters were certainly soft and comfortable.
The climate control was easier to use than most place. You just set the temperature and the system did the rest. In some places, you have to choose heat or cool and then a non-descript range, so you have to experiment to get where you want it to be...not here, you just set the exact temperature and it works.
There are two closets and plenty of space to unpack, unwind and move around. So the extra space alone is worth the little extra you'd pay here versus its sister properties next door.
It has a decent bathroom with a shower/tub combo and toilet in a room with a door and the dressing area that's open to the bedroom just outside of that.
The shower head worked well and is one of the few 'massaging' showerheads that actually works. (In the last five hotels I've stayed in the massager didn't work).
The bathroom amenties have gotten smaller with the down economy and these were very small, but it was enough for the two of us.
This property has a nice indoor pool and hot tub but the hot tub was out of service temporarily when we were there.
The breakfast was very good with several hot items including a pot of hot oatmeal and eggs and sausage. There was also make it yourself waffle irons with batter premade, which was very good.
The only real markdown for this stay was that the person staying in the room above us was pacing back and forth across the floor which creaked a little bit, so we could hear it. While it was a bit annoying, it in no way took away anything from our stay.
I used to dread coming back home to visit family because of a lack of good nearby hotels, but now with this property in the area, I will stay here again with confidence because it is clean, very high quality and a good value.
