“Free is not always better!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 January 2012

Once again I had mailed to me free night stays here, so I gave in and tried it. First at checkin, they didnt even ask me for ID just the reservation name and no deposit. That tells you how careful they are for w ho stays t here. The room is awful, very old, smelly and stains everywhere. I went down to the casino and had the buffet. Seriously, it leaves nothing to rave about, Food is ice cold, many kinds of chicken you can imagine LOL and so many empty trays where food s hould go. When you go up for another plate, make sure you tell someone, they take your things away each time and you end up with an empty table.
Going back to the room and looking again at the poor condition and how I was nervous to even lay on the bed, I left. I guess this supports the old adage, you get what you pay for, free is not always better.

“Cheap stay & cheap eats”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 December 2011

Decided to up and drive 4 1/2 hrs from detroit to indy to try out their casinos. Paying $60 for a room at a casino had me a little worried but it is what it is, a $60 room. Got one king bed in a non-smoking room, requested more pillows which were immediately delivered. Room was clean and acceptable. Coffee maker worked fine. Yes it is a little walk to casino (mostly covered) but we took the free shuttle back. Casino was good. A ton of slots and only one area of table games but a good variety. Went to their buffet for lunch which happened to only be $5, well worth $5, i may even have paid $10 but not much more. All employees in hotel and casino were kind and helpful. Yes the hotel and casino are dated, but its a very laid back atmosphere. Very different from the detroit casino's and hotels i have gotten used too. Like i said, cheap stay and cheap eats....totally worth the drive and will be going back.

“Hotel average”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 November 2011 via mobile

Just got back from staying two nights at Majestic Star. I'm not going to complain because both nights were comped. However if you are paying you might want to think twice. Hotel is very old and outdated. I will say that the few staff members I dealt with were friendly. Casino has seemed to really tighten up since they filed for bankruptcy. Also of noise bothers you there are train tracks at both the front and rear and you will hear the trains going through very frequently all night. Consider this to be about the same quality as a economy hotel, not what you find at most casino hotels. One final note, it is a long walk to the casino from the hotel, and part of that is outdoors. Their is a shuttle available so you might want to consider that. Not bad if you don't might older motels, but don't pay big money to stay here.

“Stay only if gambling next door and you don't mind being treated like a scumbag.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 August 2011

This is a review of the hotel. The casino is fine, but I would prefer to rate it separately. So, the hotel room was clean. I would feel safe sleeping here again, both physically (from scary Gary types) and safe from diseases lurking underneath the sheets. The price point was also reasonable, considering the lake view and proximity to Chicago. However, Hammond/Gary should be cheap. This low rating is being given due to the poor quality of customer service I received from the hotel staff on 8/17/2011. I was severely disappointed in the way I was treated as a first time guest. I spent two nights in this hotel, while also patronizing the casino. I checked in late the first night and asked to check out late the last day. I asked how late I'd be able to stay in the room without being charged (11:30 am) or how late I could stay in the room and be charged for just a half day (4 pm). I had stayed up very late the night before at the casino and hoped that the hotel staff would be more accommodating. However, I was told one thing by the operations manager and another thing by a front desk staff member a couple hours after initially asking the question. The front desk staff member called me at 2 pm to tell me I had 10 minutes to vacate the premises, even after I had spoken to her boss. They refused to remove the half day charge from my bill, even though I left before the 4pm deadline I was told I could stay in the room until with a charge for a half day. Since I had just woken up and showered, I asked for half an hour to pack and get ready to leave. I was threatened to be charged a full day if I wasn't out in under 10 minutes. I felt like I was being bullied at the poker table and not as if I was staying at a place that respected their guests. I won't go back and stay here again. It is also old and in need of maintenance.

“Property needy, the staff did an outstanding job”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 September 2010

Bad economy, not enough guests equals no money to upgrade or maintain. I taught a seminar here. The good: the front desk staff could not have been more helpful. And I did need help, room and catering changes, last minute issues. Karla was the person who helped me and she was equal to any Marriott staffer I have worked with. Give them an "A" for effort.
