“Confusing Complex”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 December 2011

Check in was fantastic and I was immediatley upgraded to the Executive Club Level. I have absolutely no complaints with the service I received from any Staff Member. From the front desk to my room almost required a GPS. The hotel itself is a spawling complex of facilities and I as a seasoned traveler found it very confusing. Almost pieced together in some haphazard manner. I understand that the hotel is 41 years old and this probably accounts for part of the confusion.
The building is showing its age and the lobby needs a facelift. My room on the Executive Level was very nice but the bathroom was way too small. The Executive Lounge was a nice amenity and I used it on several occassions. I also had an excellent steak in the Red River Steak House and there are variety of dining options nearby. I would certainly stay here again but I prefer the Courtyard at Grand Wayne when traveling to Fort Wayne.

“An Average Marriott”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 October 2011

The hotel staff is very friendly and makes a great effort keeping the place in shape. Nice conference facilities and restaurants inside and nearby. The building itself is a confusing sprawl and not representative of the newer Marriotts. All in all decent, but not noteworthy. I did not care for the oversized and noisy heating/cooling units in the rooms.

Room Tip: Do not choose first floor rooms. Lots of people walk the halls in this rather large sprawling build...

“Comfortable room with excellent service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 October 2011

My husband stayed here for 2 weeks while in town on business - my daughter and I came over for the second week to stay with him. We had a standard double/double room on the second floor.

I have to say that from the outset, I usually stay at Comfort Suites, so the absence of a free breakfast was sorely noticed. The attached Red River restaurant has a delicious breakfast buffet, but it costs $15 a person during the week. This is excessive, in my opinion. So, we went to a grocery store and bought muffins and fruit to keep in the room. We had to ask to have a small mini-fridge brought up, as it isn't in there as part of the standard package. They also do not have microwaves in the room, but there is one for guest use down in the gift shop.

The internet is also not included - it's free in the lobby - you have to pay $10 a night for wired service. Apparently they are having wifi installed, and we were able to hook into that at no charge to us, as my husband's company paid for it. However, it only covers one device in the room at a time, so we had to ask for another log-in so my daughter could be using her laptop at the same time her dad was on his. I am not sure if once this service is in general use if they will charge $10 per log in or not.

The room itself was very nice and the bedding was AWESOME. The fluffy down comforters and pillows were wonderful. Beware of the beds themselves though - I prefer a firm mattress and these ones you sink right into. That is a personal preference, so maybe other travelers take this as a bonus!

The bathroom was on the small side, but more than adequate. There was a small room with a washer and dryer across the hall from us, which cost $1 each. This was very handy for the longer stay!

The hotel is located quite near many shopping centers and the mall is just up the room. I recommend eating at the attached restaurant for dinner - the ribeye steak costs around $20 and it is DELICIOUS. The service is absolutely impeccable, and I can't say enough good things about them. I would also recommend Granite City brewery/restaurant which is just up the road - for lunch or dinner. I am not lying when I say I would consider making another trip to this area just to enjoy their food again! Their coleslaw is the best I've ever tasted and their chicken salad sandwich is also tasty.

The pool was well-maintained and it is a neat indoor/outdoor combo. My daughter loved this. The biggest negative to me was the whirlpool/spa. It is very, very, very tiny. Two people are fine, three is a crowd! The jets are widely spaced and do not do a good job of bubbling the water at all. Very weak. The decor around the pool is excellent, and the wood furniture is wide and sturdy and comfortable.

There was a "meet the manager" event several times while we were at this hotel, which I thought was a nice touch. They had free beer, wine and tidbits of food and you could, uh, meet the manager and some of the employees. We received periodic calls throughout our stay, asking us if we were enjoying our time at the hotel. The customer service was fantastic.

I would stay here again, I think. I really only have to complain about the soft beds, and that is just a personal issue, nothing on the hotel itself.

Oh, pay attention - there is no elevator to the second floor. If you have back issues, you should get a room on a different level!

Room Tip: No elevator to the second floor!

“Nice, Standard Mariott”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 September 2011

This was a nice, standard Mariott. The hotel was a little run down in places but they were working on rennovating it. It is a large hotel and signage was a little confusing in some places. For example, I was in Building A but it was dark when I arrived and I had to make two passes before I found the A in the shadow of the lamp above it. Also I had trouble finding my way back to my second-floor room from the lobby. Fortunately, everyone was very friendly and a helful staff member led me to my room. The hotel was very clean and well maintained. The food and service in the restaurant was good but not outstanding. I especially liked the house peppercorn barbeque ranch salad dressing on my salad.

My room was very nice but there was a problem with the toilet continuing to run after use. I called the front desk and maintenance was there within 10 minutes to fix it. The first try didn't work but I called back again and he came back promptly and got it fixed.

The Internet in the business center was the slowest I have ever encountered. It was almost as if they were using dial up (maybe they were!). I finally gave up trying to check my e-mail. They charge $10 to access Internet from your room, which is rediculous because much cheaper hotels include it for free.

Room Tip: There is no elevator for the second floor room I had so it was a bit of a hassle to lug a suitcase u...

“Excellent Service, Fantastic Dining”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 September 2011

My husband and I needed a get-away from a long year of working long hours and no vacation so far this year. We decided to drive for 2 hours and just relax for a couple of days.

This hotel offers, clean rooms, excellent service and a fantastic Red River restaurant.
The morning breakfast buffet was delicious. This is rare to have a really nice dining experience in a hotel. The biscuits and gravy on the breakfast bar are homemade, it wasn't a mix and when I mentioned to the server...they confirmed made from scratch. If I lived in this community I would go there for breakfast & other meals.

We did stay in a suite and it was very spacious and comfortable. It doesn't have the big bathrooms like in newer hotels; however it was fine as far we were concerned.

We really liked the staff at both the hotel and restaurant. Definitely would do this again.

Room Tip: We liked having the suite that overlooked the pool
