“Clean & Comfortable With Nice Kitchen”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 July 2011

Hotel is about 40 miles northwest of downtown Chicago and is located just a few miles from West Dundee and Elgin.
Positives: full-size refrigerator, 4-burner stove, dishwasher, dishes, silverware and cooking utinsels in room, desk, free connected internet, free wifi on first two floors (doesn't reach up to the third floor, comfortable bed and 4 pillows in each room, average size closet, couch, coffee table, and cushioned chair, and ac worked good, good pool, free gas grill and tables to use outside. This hotel sits just behind the Marriott Courtyard. See if you can use their facilities, since both are owned by Marriott. The Courtyard has an indoor pool, larger exercise area, and for $ 10.95 you can eat a full buffet breakfast. Maxwells is a great restaurant to get Hot Dogs, Burgers, Chicken, Gyros. Within a few miles is a Jewel-Osco grocery store, Bennigans, Red Lobster, Chili's, McDonalds
Negatives: Not really any big negatives. They do offer a very small continental breakfast with juice, coffee, milk, bagels, muffins, cereal, etc... Small exercise room with a couple of pieces of equipment.

Room Tip: Ask for 1st level room offers easier access

“Close to some businesses, VERY noisy”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 May 2007

Spent 3 evenings here this week. Rate of $89 was not bad. The PACE bus stops just on the side...short walk over grass, a little longer if you go around to the street.

The hotel has 3 buildings, an outdoor pool, seasonal BBQ facilities (usually open around Memorial Day) and laundry facitilites. High speed, wired internet in rooms (free) or Wireless in lobby.

The rooms are all suites....studios and 2 bedrooms. I was upgraded to a 2 BR since that was all that was available when I checked in. Great! But, I really didn't need all the room.

The suites all feature little full kitchens: stove, fridge, oven, micro, coffeemaker, toaster, pots, plates, etc. There is a Jewel about a 2 mile drive away, as are a Target and a mall.

A fre grab-n-go breakfast is offered which consists of Sara Lee muffins, whole fruit, granola bars, juices and coffee. You can go next door to the Courtyard and get a full, hot breakfast (ala carte or buffet---about $7-10 dollars depending on what you order) that can be room-charged.

The 2 BRs have 1 bathroom and 2 TVs. One room as a double bed and the other has a Queen. There's a table wth chairs that can also function as a desk, a couch (sofabed) and an arm chair.

Great selection of TV channels. The bathroom is divided into 2 little spaces, the sink, and the tub.toilet. Both have their own doors so 1 person can shower while the other uses the sink area...and both doors can be closed!

The main problems are noise from above, below and adjacent rooms, and lousy ventilation. If people around you are cooking stinky foods, as happened every day while I was there, your room will stink! Also, the AC works, but it is very noisy!

My neighbor's phone conversations were so loud that I could hear them over both the TV and the AC! Lousy construction!

TownePlaces permit pets as well, for an additional fee. So, you may hear barking and meowing critters. Not really a problem, just FYI.

The staff was rather nice. The room was clean. Beds are standard comfy Marriott new bedding....not the marshmallow-like beds in full service hotels, but very comfy!

Several restaurants in the area deliver and there are plenty of them in surrounding towns. I simply went to the Jewel and bought some stuff to cook, but, there is a place called Dominicks pizzeria that also has some very reasonably priced foods, including daily specials such as pasta ranging fron $5-7 dollars, and fish and lasagna specials from $7-8 dollars.

All in all, this was a better than average stay. If you need to be in this area of West Dundee/Elgin to be near the Sears Centre or Grand Victoria casino, this could be a very good choice!

  • Liked — Overall comfort, full kitchen, free internet, good TV selection
  • Disliked — You really need a car, smell and noise from adjacent rooms

“An Unexpectedly Excellent Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 February 2007

I booked a two-bedroom suite, and I was very pleased with the accomodations: well-appointed, nice-sized (very clean) bedrooms that did NOT have paper-thin walls.

Living room area had a large table (with the broadband internet wired connection module) with 3 chairs, an easy chair and a sofa. TVs are located in the one (larger) bedroom and the living room. Numerous windows (no closed-in feeling). Full kitchen with a decent amount of utentils and cookware.

Management was very friendly. Parking lot was well illuminated and safe. Two very convenient mini-store/gas stations are within easy walking distance (1 to 2 blocks).

Continental fast-break breakfast (as in all Townplace suites' I've encountered) consisted of large packaged muffins, fruit, orange/apple juice and breakfast bars.

Great value for the money.

“Better than Expected!!!”

I did extensive research on line to try to find a nice place to stay outside of Chicago. The price was what eventually got us to reserve a suite (two bedrooms) 104.00 a night with a couch that also pulled out as a bed. I was a little cautious and worried because the price was so "right". There were 6 of us 4 adults and two children. We took my parents with us who are picky, picky and my mom and dad were thrilled. They have redone the insides of the rooms and the pictures on line to not do it justice. The cleaning staff did an excellent job, and thrilled my daughters who are 7 and 4 by putting their dolls on the couch with blankets! The ground were nicely kept and the staff was very helpful! When asking about a place to eat we were told alexanders right next to the hotel was a good place...IT WAS EXCELLENT! Next time we go to chicago we will be staying here!

  • Liked — Easy to get to off/on hwy very close
  • Tips/Secrets — Stop at Alexanders ...a good family place to eat

“Average”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 July 2005

We had a 1 bdrm suite on the 1st floor of the back bldg closest to the pet walking area. That would have been great if we had brought our dogs but due to the $75 nonrefundable deposit we chose to leave them at home.

Regardless, we booked our hotel on Priceline 2 weeks before & immediately requested a nonsmoking room about 15 minutes later. They didn't have our booking yet but were assured that they made a note to make sure our request was honored as they still had some available. Well as you may have guessed we ended up in a smoking room & since the place was completely booked we couldn't be moved. I am highly allergic to smoke so this was not ideal. At first the smell wasn't too bad since they had just finished cleaning it, but later it was very obvious & stunk. We bought some Frebreeze & sprayed everything - curtains, lampshades, couch, carpets, mattress, sheets, & pillows. That worked for about an hour & then the smoky smell was back.

Also the insulation doesn't seem to be very good. A dog started barking around 11 pm. You could only hear it when you were in bed so apparently the dog was right next door. Then around midnight, the strong odor of pot filled our room. We assume it came from the people across the hall who had been pretty loud w/ what appeared to be a party from all the visitors arriving. We put a towel along the bottom of the door to hopefully alleviate anymore smells from entering & ran the exhaust fan in the bathroom overnight.

The decor was just okay - old-fashioned floral comforter which we didn't use, stained green loveseat & dimly lit shower/tub area. The kitchen area & the rest of the bathroom were okay. They did have a pool which we didn't use. The continental breakfast was fine - fruit, muffins, granola bars, coffee, & juice.

Check in is at 3 & we showed up about 3:30. We were told that it would be 45 minutes before our room was ready. This wasn't to our liking since we needed to get ready for meeting friends & family as soon as possible. They made a call & found out that our room had just been finished. They forgot to empty the trash in our bathroom from the previous guest but we figured this was minor since we needed to get ready & go.

Overall it was just okay, average, nothing special but for the $35/night Priceline price I rec'd we were fine with it. I think we would have been much happier if we'd rec'd the nonsmoking room.
