“I would not stay here again.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012

I grew up in Rockford and remember thinking that Cliffbreakers was as classy as it could get. I wanted to get married here. Of course, when I told my husband this on our recent visit, he looked at me and said, "Thank you for not making us get married here."

To put it bluntly, the place appears to be a dump. The rates were cheap, but so was the space.

The wallpaper is peeling and carpets are dirty and dingy. There was a musty smell in all of the rooms and the heating/cooling system never worked quite right.

We had one of the whirlpool rooms on the first floor which seemed decent until the next morning when we drew our curtains. Right outside our door looked like a dump. There were pop cans, Four Loko cans, plastic cups, plastic bags, and the kicker? A hotel towel covered in vomit. Clearly, someone was having a party and chose to just chuck all of their garbage out the window. I brought this to the front desk's attention, but there the garbage remained for at least another 24 hours.

I also noted various bits of garbage that was never removed from the halls including a condom box right outside the elevator.

The gym they touted? It had two very old treadmills, a broken Bowflex machine and a broken weight machine. No real way to get my fitness on. The pool, however, was empty at 7:30 a.m., so I was able to get a nice swim in. It was clean, thankfully.

The goods, along with the pool, was that our room was cleaned upon request, and the front desk staff was friendly.

I wouldn't stay here again. The property just isn't maintained well, and I felt like the property which may be touted as nice, really isn't.

“Unique hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

My husband and I spent the night here for my birthday. We were a little wary because of some of the reviews. The hotel is old, but it seemed like many renovations were being done. The pool was closed until April. Our room had new carpet and wallpaper and was extremely clean. The furniture and drapes were a little worn. We were on the first floor but our view of the river was still pretty. Our room had a large whirlpool that was wonderful. We had dinner in the restaurant and were impressed with the food and menu. The view from the restaurant was beautiful. The free breakfast was okay. We were sorry we didn't try the brunch. The bar and front desk staff were pretty busy but very friendly.

Now some of the things that could be improved: Although the bathroom was obviously redone, the shower was the smallest shower I have ever seen. If you tried to shave your legs in there, you'd drown! There was room for a larger one, so it seems they were being overly frugal when remodeling. They were also very stingy with the bath towels-we only had 2 which is ridiculous for a room with a whirlpool. I'm not sure if the bed was new, but it was not very comfortable. The pillows were awful. I am definitely bringing my own pillow next time I travel, In the information about the resort, it stated that 10 PM was quiet time at the resort. This was not enforced. From midnight until 4 AM (yes 4 AM!), people were yelling and talking loudly in the hallways, slamming doors, arguing in the room next door and generally making it very difficult to sleep. There was a very large banquet at the hotel that evening and I am assuming these rude people were from the party. I realize the hotel can't control all of their guests but I know for a fact that the front desk got at least one complaint and nothing changed.

We did like the hotel and would probably give it another chance since the noise hopefully is not the norm. The river views, cleanliness and awesome whirlpool make it a good value for the price.

Room Tip: higher floors have a nicer river view

“Amazing customer service.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 January 2012

My husband and I travel for a living. So we are no stranger to poor customer service. But I have to tell you the staff here really do try to make your stay as plasent as possible. The rooms are amazing as well. We stayed here an extra 4 nights becuase of the kind people here. This made us drive an hour to our next job site for a couple of days, but it was well worth it. The Lexington Hotel is the best kept secret in town!

“Shabby and no customer service skills to be found”

I am from Rockford, so when we come to visit, we usually stay at Cliffbreakers. This time we had flown in for a funeral in the month of January. Needless to stay, we haven't been to this property since 2004 and it really has gone downhill. I have worked for the past 12 years in Florida at various hotels and resorts, so I know how hotel staff should operate around their guests. We ended up staying in 3 different rooms on a 4 night stay. The first room had such a horrible bed, I had to share a bed with my sister the first night. We got in really late and we were exhausted after a long funeral day. So, the next morning I went to the front desk and nicely explained the situation.. not so much as "I am sorry for your inconvenience," just tapped on the computer and handed me two keys.. didn't offer to help with the move..nice. The second room was improved and the tv actually was watchable. But what is up with only having 2 towels in the rooms? Due to the extremely cold weather, I had to call the front desk to ask for an extra blanket. The phone rang and rang and rang.. no one ever answered. I had to call from my cell phone to their main line to get someone to answer. When I told them I was doing this, no explanation as to why I had to call on my cell phone. I asked for an extra blanket and two towels. I thought they would come in about 10 minutes.. no, it was like an hour later. The front desk person delivered them so I assumed they have zero staff. Granted, there were probably 6 whole people in the property when we stayed with the exception of Sat. night. I could go on, but for me, other than the shabby rooms, it was the complete lack of any kind of service that really peeved me. We even had to move on our last night because they had a water pipe burst. Again, we were getting in late and she just told us to move so we wouldn't be bothered by the noise. LOL.. yeah, a few doors down was somehow going to make a difference from the big blower machines. Again, no offering to help move. No sorry, no nothing.. I can tell you firsthand from front desk experience that customers would let me have it if I treated them like this. I would not recommend this place in less you are part of some kids tournament in the area. It is apparent from the condition of the rooms. They lack basic amenities, and if you are a diva when it comes to hotels, then this is not your place. The rooms are outdated. I have to laugh in retrospect at the grilling we took for our 4- diamond level beachfront hotel rooms and not being good enough for some of those people. Those rooms were posh compared to this place.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with good beds.. otherwise they put you in the most used of rooms.

“Great New Year's Eve”

We went to a concert in Rockford and stayed here. We had a wonderful dinner at the restaurant in the hotel. After the concert we returned to the hotel and our adjoining rooms and had a great celebration. The rooms are big enough to relax without having to sit on the beds.
Everyone at the hotel was friendly and breakfast was an added perk.
