“Welcoming home away from home”

As we made plans to visit friends in Oak Park we were delighted with our choice to stay at Under the Gingko Tree. It was filled with interesting antiques and art but the hospitality of Gloria surpassed it all. We arrrived mid Thanksgiving weekend as many guest were leaving.....all with smiles and hugs for Gloria as they left with "see you soon or we will be back". The location is ideal as it is within walking distance to our friends apartment but also to the charming village center. We found the B&B on Tripadvisor and realized the majority of reviews were quite positive. As for Slufoot's negative review my perception is that when staying in a B&B it is precisely that....someone is sharing their home for us to sleep in and enjoy breakfast. We would never expect that we could invade the private areas of the home. We stayed in Room #1 and felt like we were in a tree house.
Great place to stay and we will return many times, hopefully.

“Stay at Under the Ginkgo Tree - you will be glad you did.”

My 17 year old daughter and I stayed at this bed and breakfast for 2 nights in Nov 2011 while we visited Chicago and Concordia University Chicago. We loved it. The house is beautiful, comfortable matress and Gloria is the best. Breakfast was perfect with fresh berries and homemade banana and pumpkin bread and great coffee. Try it and you will be glad you did. Great location - you can work to the train station from Ginkgo Tree and also access shops and restaurants in Oak Park without having to drive. Gloria is a wealth of information about the city.

“Worst B&B/Hotel Ever!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 November 2011

Our entire extended family stayed at this B&B two years ago for a reunion and without exception we all found it to be the worst B&B/hotel we had ever stayed at. The husband of the woman who runs the place parked himself in the living room to watch tv but refused to let anyone else watch or use the tv. This automatically puts about 33% of the first floor off limits. Few if any of the rooms have tv so we found this off limits living room to be very odd indeed. Also, the long weekend we were there, the kitchen was being remodeled so the breakfast was cold and sparse. One person in our group suggested that a B&B without the last "B" for breakfast, should be discounted but the owner scoffed at the suggestion. Why should she be accomodating? She already had our money. At one point my 12 year old son casually mentioned he was bored. Who wouldn't be honestly? The owner lit into him about never ever saying he was bored about anything. He could always learn something even with down time. It was unbelievably inappropriate. We were asked to get off the front porch one night because it was late. Another off limits portion of the house apparently. We aren't people who are hard to please. We've all stayed at places we like, more than other places. As they say, "you pays your money and you takes your chances". But honestly, this B&B was absolutely horrible in every respect. My brother in law said to me as he was leaving, "I'm going to miss this place. Just not very much". This from a guy I've never heard say a bad word about anything. Be forwarned! You can stay anyplace else and be better off.

“Great Home Base in Oak Park”

Under the Ginkgo Tree is a very nice, though basic, B & B. It is located within walking distance of downtown with a wide variety of restaurants. You can also walk to all the Frank Lloyd Wright sites in Oak Park and the Hemingway sites. The CTA Green Line into Chicago is also a short walk. We stayed in Room 1 which had a bathroom. The room is as shown in the pictures, nothing fancy but spacious. Breakfast is definitely continental, with cereal, breads and fruit. If you want more, there are restaurants nearby. Gloria is a fount of information about the area and Chicago. The house itself is lovely, the woodwork is amazing. For the price, there is no better value in Oak Park.

“A home away from home”

I decided to stay at a B&B because I was travelling alone to meet some friends who live in the Chicago area. I couldn't have picked a better placed to stay! It was perfect! A lovely older home, wonderfully decorated with spacious rooms, cozy beds, a comfortable walk to the train to Chicago. The Frank Lloyd Wright home and studio and Ernest Hemingway birthplace and museum are just blocks away. I really enjoyed walking the neighbourhood with its large gracious homes. Even walking alone at night, I felt very safe. The owner, Gloria, was the best! I felt very much at home and she took care of me like a mother, giving me advice on safe ways to get to the city. What an inspirational lady! She has done so many things, you can spend a long time at breakfast talking with her and her guests from all over the world. If I go back to Chicago, I'm definitely staying here again.
