“"Fair" at Best”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 October 2009

Had to run the water in the tub for ten minutes to clear the gunk that came out. So there I was wiping out the tub, running the water, wiping and running, wiping and running until the water ran clear. I did call the front desk and Cassandra had never heard of this being a problem but did offer to change our room. I had already wiped down the room with Lysol wipes prior to cleaning the tub so I did not want to start over in another room.
The hallway on the second floor smelled like smoke. The room (201) did not smell...that would have had me moving to another room.
The staff was friendly... always greeted us

“A little worn”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 September 2009

We stay in Morton a few times a year for family visits, this was our first time to try the Best Western. The lobby area was fine, quite large and bare. The clerk was having problems with their registration system but did find our reservation and checked us manually so we didn't have to wait. Handicap parking was in front of the door that served as the entry to the rooms. The door area and entry were pretty dirty looking with some trash right around the elevator entrance. The handicap accessible room was only 2 doors from the elevator which was nice as in many places they are farther down the hall. The bathroom was fully accessible however the shower had a removable bench that was very difficult for my partner to install. Once the bench was in it's wall mounted bracket, it was almost too far away for me to reach the controls.

The next morning we went to the breakfast which was set up in the hotel's bar area. Breakfast is served from 6 until 10 and we arrived about 6:30. Everything was set out on the edge of the bar. There were trays of sausage, scrambled eggs, diced potatoes and sausage gravy but no biscuits. Bread for the toaster was in 2 half bags, no bagels and just a flat pastry of some kind. Cereal was in 2 containers where you put a bowl under a chute and pull out what you want, milk was in school lunch size boxes and set in an iced bucket. There were 4 pieces of fruit out and mixture poured in open cups to make waffles for yourself. There was no attendant, only a guy dressed like a janitor, wearing an orange vest who came and took away the milk. He said it was spoiled but he'd have to call someone to see what to do. The whole eating area had sticky floors, looked dingy and was very dark. Utensils were scattered about in open baskets. I had a few pieces of sausage which I ate with my fingers because I refused to use their silverware, my partner had plain toast and we left. No one else was eating there but a few people did come in, look around and leave. We had coffee in the room from their hot shot machine.

We only saw a front desk person and no other staff except for the guy taking away the milk. No housekeeping was evident. The room price was $71, very reasonable and it was very quiet the whole time we were there but the place was just worn and shabby looking and the breakfast and breakfast area was absolutely awful.

“Conference Center problems”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 June 2008

We are local and went to the Ashland House Conference Center for a Mothers Day brunch. They apparently had '3 seatings' for brunch and we were in the last. Our total bill was $112.46 for 4 adults (1 was a teen) and a child ($19.95 per person plus the tip was added on). When we went to the buffet, we saw a huge fruit bowl with one strawberry in it - and it was never filled - rather it was removed. Our choices were extremely disappointing - scrambled egges, cold greasy bacon, sausage, biscuits and gravy and I can't rememer what else because I went to the omelet station - the only good thing about the entire meal. They had a place set up for meat, and brought out cold/tough prime rib close to the end of our meal. As soon as the last person went through the buffet line, the staff focused on taking down the buffet line rather than serving their customers. It was not possible to get a refill on coffee. Our choice for dessert was cherry pie and frozen banana cream pie. they eventually brought out a tray (probably 10-12 pieces) of turtle cheese cake, and put it on the table. With 60-70 people eating there, it was a like a stampede to get to the dessert, and of course they had no more.

The biggest problem was that I contacted the manager via e-mail the following day and he responded immediately, apologizing and offering a '$112 gift card' for the restaurant located at the motel. I immediately replied to his e-mail and gave him our home address. I have not heard another word from him or the conference center. I believe the only thing worse than not responding to an unhappy customer would be to respond promising a service, and not following through. We WON'T go back.

“Fantastic place to stay”

We stayed at this hotel for a wedding in Morton. We were very impressed. One of our favorite parts was the free breakfast buffet that included eggs, bacon, sausage, waffles, and a little bit of everything. Yum! The staff was nice and the place seemed updated and very clean.

  • Liked — Breakfast and nice rooms
  • Disliked — Workout room needs a treadmill.

“Dreary, & maybe unsafe”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 June 2007

I have reluctantly stayed at the Ashland House 4 times while visiting the East Peoria in-laws, simply because it's (relatively) new and conveniently located, but I'll never do it again.

The place is dreary and depressing, with bad lighting and Motel 6 linens. The toilet seat might be so loose it slips off, or maybe the shower will emit a high-pitched scream. Or maybe your shoes will turn the dirt from the carpet into mud on the bathroom floor, which the housekeeper won't mop up. I have never had a room with a window that locks. That's a very serious safety issue I've complained about twice, but evidently they haven't taken it seriously.

The cheap, stale breakfast buffet makes Denny's look like a Sunday brunch at the Ritz-Carlton. One visit and it was off to the Cracker Barrel, which is just across the street, every morning.

In my opinion, this property is fine if you're passing through and need a place to crash for the night. I think it's an awful place for more than a single night. Others obviously disagree, since they seem to be very busy on weekends. There always seem to be high school students staying at the property while competing in sporting events, and there are lots of outdoor weddings on-site (the bride and groom have a great view of a Super Wal-Mart while they're saying I Dos).

If you're a woman traveling alone, confirm that the window locks.
