Took the family back to the Chicago area to celebrate Chinese New Year. Our usual hotel in the area was booked up so we needed to find another place to stay. We've happily stayed at the nearby Hyatt Place but were wanting to soak in a hot tub, which it lacked. This Embassy Suites has a nice pool and hot tub so we decided to stay here.
First, the BAD - We've been to this hotel twice before (a decade earlier) and stopped staying there because of loud kids roaming the atrium area in the evening. I even made a remark at checkin that I hope things would be different this time. Things haven't changed. Teenagers were running around in swimwear playing tag (or something like it) on all the floors of the hotel, shouting at each other throughout the evening. In the morning we found numerous paper airplanes laying around as we walked to breakfast. The fire alarm was tripped as check-out time neared. My guess it was one of the unsupervised kids.
The pool and the hot tub were disappointments. The water was cooler than we like in the prefer and the "hot" tub was about the temperature that we prefer a pool to be. The hot tub also failed to produce bubbles when we turned it on by the wall timer. Instead, we heard the sound of a dying vacuum cleaner then silence as the smell of a burnt motor could be smelt. We shut the timer off to prevent any fire. The hotel had the hot tub repaired by morning and warmer, but they were packed with kids. One very sweet woman was supervising most of them so they weren't obnoxious like the kids roaming the hotel but room to play in the water with my two smaller ones was non-existent.
We dried off and headed for the evening reception. The bartender was a little rude and the offerings were slim. I was told I could only have 1 drink every 15 minutes. That's not a bad rule if we didn't have to stand in line for 5+ minutes for a drink. Another hotel worker kept coming over to chat with (and distract) the bartender but didn't help with clearing the line. Food offered were a snack-mix and nachos. They were okay.
We returned to our room to watch a movie on Netflix but that wasn't going to happen either. The Hyatt Place let's you input your own video into their nice flat-screen. Neither of the TVs in our suite had any way for us to plug in to view our content. We watched the standard TV offerings but some channels kept freezing every few seconds making them unwatchable.
Upon checkout I waited for the "was everything okay" question but it never came. If it had, I would have vented the hotel's shortcomings.
Now the GOOD - Everyone except the bartender was extremely friendly and willing to help. Even the other hotel guests (adults) were very friendly and easy to chat with. The breakfast was good. The rooms were clean and nicely decorated. The best part of the evening reception was the small area that the hotel set up for kids. They put out a jug of "kiddie cocktail", a bowl of snack mix and games. Then they put a kid's movie on a TV. The guy that set up the kids area and took care of snacks really hustled to get things up and running as well as try and help everyone out. I didn't get his name but he should be commended.
In conclusion: Hopefully the pool area will be working if you visit. Maybe we just had bad timing, but regardless, the main reason we chose this hotel was the pool area and it turned out to be a bust. If you want a hotel that you can take your kids and let them run amuck as you enjoy alone time, this is the hotel for you. Others beware.
