The reviews here were so good, I broke my old rule of always visiting a hotel before booking. Nope, I just hopped on the Metra from Chicago and went straight to this hotel, blindly. I ended up in tears.
This place is DISGUSTING, and that's saying a lot considering the fact that I'm just coming here straight from spending several days in a dorm-style room in a hostel with a bathroom that's only cleaned once per day. I was kicking myself for not staying put at the hostel, which looks like a freakin' palace next to this Extended Stay. I've stayed at many, many Extended Stays and know what to expect. This hotel is gross.
First of all, we called ahead of time to make sure they had rooms, and confirm their rates. The lady told us there were 4 floors and that the top floor was NON-SMOKING. This is rare, so we were happy. She also said the rate was 64.99 per night for 2 people, and that the hotel was half-empty so no need for reservations and we'd get our pick of the litter in room location.
Fast forward a very long Metra ride to our check-in. The after-hours front desk staff was RUDE as they grunted and grunted every time we asked a question. They quoted us more than the price we were told on the phone, PLUS they wanted to charge 5 dollars extra PER PERSON (this is not typical of Extended Stay and also was not told to us over the phone). There is nothing nearby...what is the point of a kitchenette if there's no supermarket within walkable distance? Everything closes at 10pm, too. But, that's beyond the control of the hotel.
What isn't beyond the control of the hotel, though, is to have non-smoking rooms actually not smell like smoke. I'm pretty much certain I'm in a smoking room, as there are no signs anywhere posted not to smoke. And it reeks of smoke. As someone who is allergic to smoke (I told them this at the front desk) I'm going to be enjoying a sinus infection for the next week and a half thanks to them, and they claim it is the only room available. It faces a freeway/very busy NOISY street, by the way, and a giant fluorescent lamp post.
This place smells so bad I want to vomit, and considering the fact that I'm desperately trying to recover from mild food poisoning I suffered over lunch, I thought this place would be so so so much better than the shared accomodations at the hostel. Well, no, it's not.
There are stains all over the carpet in both the main areas and the room, there's a giant dark stain on the bed spread (I haven't even looked at the bed yet but I wouldn't be surprised to find dead bugs in it considering the overall state of this place..) the wall has patches of white paint even though the rest of the walls are beige, there are no tissues in this room (one of the few ammenities Extended Stay DOES provide) and the bed is so old it caves in the middle when I merely sit on it.
Despite needing sleep very badly, and being very ill from the food poisoning, I won't be getting any sleep tonight and I have no idea how I'll make it though until morning. Check out time is less than 11 hours away from our check in time, and the staff wouldn't even reduce the rate.
Nasty staff, nasty room, not good for people without a car (nothing to eat nearby, I had to eat a 2 day old muffin despite the aformentioned food poisoning recovery...) stinks of smoke even in so-called non smoking rooms, noisy, uncomfortable...there is not ONE good thing about this place.
I literally cried 20 minutes when we first walked in. By far the worst Extended Stay American I have EVER seen, and I've stayed in one that had cockroaches. STAY AWAY.
