“Wonderful Stay!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 July 2008

My husband and I stayed here for New Years Eve. We needed a little getaway so we spent 3 nights at the Captain Gear. We really enjoyed our stay. The owners were really nice and friendly. We enjoyed chatting with them, but they were also really good about giving us privacy. Our room was beautiful, clean, and very tastefully decorated. There was a small TV and DVD player and they had lots of movies to watch. There was also a little fridge with drinks and some treats in our room. On New Years Eve they had h'orderves and a champagne toast for all of the guest which we thought was really nice. The breakfast was excellent! My husband is a cook and a tough critic when it comes to food and he really enjoyed the breakfast. I would highly recommend this B&B. Very warm, inviting, lovely owners, amazing food, and an all around wonderful stay. We will be staying here again the next time we are in Galena.

“Love, Love, Love The Gear”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 January 2008

We love The Captain Gear. Found it via internet search in March and took a chance. This is the second time we have been there. The home is beautifully decorated. It is kind of a cross between Ballard Designs meets Restoration Hardware. Not your typical B&B. We loved the fireplace, bathroom and bedding. All elegant and comfortable. Despite the homes atmosphere the best part has got to be the breakfast! It is truly gourmet! I'm certain we will never visit another home in Galena!

  • Liked — The decor and food.

“Wonderful Weekend Getaway!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 October 2007

My husband and I just stayed at the Captain Gear for a 2-day weekend getaway. It was a really lovely experience. We stayed in the Mary room, which was a bit small but beautiful. The bed was super comfy, and the fireplace was a great touch. As other reviewers have mentioned, Suzanne's breakfasts are a work of art - don't bother making lunch plans! Suzanne and Gary were both very friendly, and the location was very convenient to downtown .

The one irritating inconvenience that Suzanne and Gary have no control over - Bench Street has no street sign where it intersects with Hwys 84/20... apparently, the city of Galena thinks drivers should just know where it is! For future travelers - Bench St. is the unmarked street that intersects 84 at the stoplight by the bridge... turn towards the Galena newspaper building in order to get to Captain Gear).

Make your reservations early, especially for October, and enjoy!

“So Wonderful and Relaxing!”

We chose the Captain Gear house because the reviews on this website praised it so highly. They were absolutlely right!! As with the other June reviewer - everything was wonderful - the food to die for, the rooms, decor, atmosphere, etc were more than we could have imagined. Suzanne and Gary are wonderful and friendly hosts too. My husband has stayed at several hotels in different areas in the world, but said the Captain Gear by far was the best place he has ever stayed. We will be back without a doubt!!

“Love the Gear House!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 June 2007

This bed and breakfast is a class of it's own. Not a detail was
forgotten! The decor is absolutely beautiful and the hosts, Suzanne and Gary were fantastic. The property is close enough to downtown to Galena to walk, but you feel like you are in the country.
Gorgeous landscape and a wonderful patio. All of the rooms are luxuriously decorated and comfy!
Every morning we had a 3 course gourment breakfast. It was
unbelieveable! We never wanted to eat lunch because we were so full!
This is definitely a fantastic deal for the price and I highly recommend staying there.
