“Neat hotel. If I return to Freeport I will go right back here!”
The Freeport Country Inn & Suites was recommended to us when we announced our visit to Freeport. We booked with them & began reading the reviews, which were good. As I searched more, I found this hotel. The historical building, the word "new" in the description, the pictures on the website made me want to switch. The rate was within $10 of the Country Inn & Suites. We booked and were glad we did. I never even saw the other hotel; but really enjoyed the Hampton.
I've posted a link for pictures at the end of this review if you would like to get a feel for the hotel.
The hotel is in a building that was built in the 1920s. It has plenty of character as a result. There is also a pub on the ground level. We didn't go there, so I can't give any information on it. I do believe that room service is available from there (call hotel directly for that information). It's in the big middle of town, which I liked.
Our check-in was awkward and lengthy, which caused us to be late arriving at our family member's home, which I didn't like. It took us 30-40 minutes to finally end up in a suitable room for us. The first room had a refrigerator but it didn't work. I called down to the desk and explained my problem. The clerk was kind enough to stop my husband and give him another room key and she told me the room number. Okay, now we've moved to this room. IT HAS NO REFRIGERATOR AT ALL, which was the whole reason I called with my problem on the first room. At this point I left my husband there (who had been driving for 6 hours and was getting frustrated by now) and went down to the desk. I explained the problem and they told me they weren't sure they had a "room with a fridge". I was becoming frustrated now. We carry much of our own supplies to save money on travel. A fridge is a must. She looks at me bewildered and says that not all rooms have refrigerators and she doesn't think she has a room available with one. I'm getting hot. Then she suggests a room with two queens that "may have a fridge". This was an insult. I booked a king room! I'm in customer service myself and know better than to ask a customer to step down when we can't accommodate their original requests! Finally, after much ado she offers another room. Mind you, through all of this, we're all very polite to one another and got through it.
Although incredibly frustrating at the time, this was the only real glitch.
The room was awesome as you'll see by the pictures. We LOVED IT! After all that we actually wound up with a corner king room! The clerk didn't tell me this. She just gave me this key. :) The fridge worked, the wi-fi was blazing fast, the bed was so comfortable I just can't describe. When we got done with our day and kicked off our shoes, we both knew there was nowhere else in Freeport we'd rather be that right there at the Hampton!
The hotel has a pool which some might call small. You have to remember, this hotel was built in the 1920s. I think a lot less people traveled back then. Another curious thing is that the elevators are extremely small compared to the elevators in our hotels today. Either we've gotten bigger or there are many more conventions held in hotels these days! LOL One thing about the elevators. They are a bit slower than what I'm used to. Not a problem, by any means. Just a warning so you don't get impatient if you visit the hotel.
There is a very nice breakfast in the morning. I'm told by the hotel staff that the menu rotates. When we were there it was plentiful. The coffee is very good. The traditional continental items are there, plus one or two hot items each morning. We had (what appeared to be oven baked) small cheese omelets. Very tasty! I was very satisfied with the breakfast.
When you're in Freeport, by all means, choose the Hampton with confidence!
