“Old. Scary. Shared bathroom. Feels like the YMCA.”

I hate giving this place a bad review, because the owner/innkeep is such a charming nice woman. But based purely on the merit (or lack thereof) of the establishement itself, I have to say that it's one of the worst places I've ever stayed. My college dorm was newer, more modern and cleaner -- and it was 40+ years old back in the 1990s when I lived there! Seriously, you have to share a bathroom. I took a shower, and afterward found there were no towels in the shared bathroom! This is an issue. I had to yell down the hallway for help. Not pleasant. The mattress is OLD -- like 1940's old. The wallpaper is peeling. The furniture is old and beat up. The window view is of a brick wall. The place SME|LLS old. We felt like we were in a haunted house. Seriously. The stuff of nightmares. Never again.

“cute and affordable”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 November 2010

I was in evanston for a conference and am so happy that my friend scoped out this place. At first it was kind of creepy and reminded me of the hotel where the movie " The Shining" took place and then once I got over that and decided I wouldn't hang out there alone It was charming and quaint. There was a European feel to the place and we had a room w/ king bed and then a pullout couch in another room. The beds were comfy enough and the place was clean. It's not fancy but I wasn't on vacation so that was fine. The rooms were clean and taken care of. There's a small TV with a couple of channels and there is a restaurant that I did not get to try down in the basement that looks cozy. There's an adoreable library if you are looking for a cozy place t o curl up with abook and a nice lounge area. The breakfast was mini muffins, coffee, Oj, toast so that may have been lacking. Most bed and breakfasts that I have stayed in the past offer a full meal like eggs and such. This was ok to grab something on the run if that's what you are looking for. It's close to lots of restaurants and shops and close to Northwestern Univ.

Leave yourself few minutes to check out as it was sort of a slow process- but then again I'm from New York.

“I would not stay here! Very outdated and not very clean.”

My husband and I were in Evanston to attend a football game. We love B and B's, and boutique hotels. Based on the online description, this sounded perfect. From the minute we opened the front door, I was nervous. The entry rugs were very dirty. We walked upstairs to the check- in desk. There must have been 20 years of paperwork scattered throughout the office. It was a mess. We got our keys and went to our room. It was so outdated. The bedspread must have been fifteen years old. Although we weren't happy, we decided to stay for the two nights. I never unpacked my suitcase. We were out of there at 6 am Sunday morning.

On the brighter side, the location was perfect. We parked our car on Friday night and never needed the car until our exit on Sunday morning. Evanston is a beautiful town. Great shopping, food, easy access to the L, and walking distance to the game. If this hotel would update the rooms, and clean up, it would be a great place to stay. It has the potential to be very charming.

“Not luxury, but unique, charming experience; a good deal and OK for (well-behaved) kids”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 September 2010

We liked the antique-packed main parlor and although it wasn't perfect for a family with two small kids, we were able to keep them from toppling any chairs or breaking anything, and the staff was very nice about our special needs and early-morning noise, if not always quick to respond to requests. We may return when they're a little older (the kids, not the staff). Breakfast was simple but fine. It's an old-style inn, and it felt like the kind of place people would return to year after year for the unique ambiance; the experience is being shared and so you end up chatting with other guests about it. Not so great: tiny elevator. The room was comfortable; typical Chicago knocky radiators kept it cozy in winter -- even a little overheated. It's a little run-down but we actually found that part of the charm. It's really a matter of taste and what you expect from your B&B experience.

“Take a step back in time with all the modern conveniences of today”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 April 2010

This inn is absolutely charming! It has an antique decor that beckons you into the main parlor where a very nice continental breaksfast is served every morning along with the local newspapers. My room was cozy and had one of the most comfortable beds I've ever slept on. The staff is exceptionally welcoming and accomodating. I 'll never stay in a cold, pricey, downtown Chicago hotel ever again! It's so easy to get anywhere from it. It's an easy walking distance to restaurants, public transportation, shops and Northwestern U.
