“Good Budget Hotel on Lake Shore drive in close proximity of Convention Center”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 January 2012

Hello friends,
I had read lot of negative reviews about this hotel but still dared to book a room for 5 nights as I had limited budget and wanted a hotel which would be closer to Convention Center.
The Good: The hotel is right infront of Michigan lake and offers a very good view. The location is ideal for travelers as it offers free parking and easy to locate. They also have free shuttle to downtown at scheduled intervals and so connectivity is to downtown is good. The train station is also 5 blocks away and you can easily walk to 43rd street station from the hotel. The rooms were clean and spacious. The lounge is not very attractive but overall facilities are good at the price they offer. The internet connectivity was good in rooms and it was free so I enjoyed it.
The Bad: Far away from downtown and you are dependent on their shuttle to travel to the downtown. The breakfast had limited menu and I wish they had better varieties. The swimming pool was not operational & gym was too small.
It is a good budget hotel with all basic amenities and good if you want a cheaper accommodation nearby Convention Center.

Room Tip: Rooms with lake view are good.

“it was poor”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 January 2012

I booked that hotel using price line .
When i saw the hotel and its room i was shocked .
rooms were tinny and old furniture.
Pool was dirty and also in some out side location from hotel.
after watching this i left the hotel and book another in down town chicago.
And they did not refund me my money.

“Great service, neighborhood seemed fine to us”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 December 2011

We stayed here for just one night. When we pulled up I was underwhelmed by the appearance of the place, but the lobby was nice, and when we got into our room it was fine. I inquired about upgrading to a lakeview and did so for a small fee ($20). This was SO worth it -- our "lakeview" was also a suite with a separate living area! Great deal, and the view was fantastic. This was through ANGIE at the front desk -- she was so nice and helpful and made our stay so much better. Whatever she makes, she deserves a raise!

I didn't notice any smell in the hallway at all, nor in our room. The bathroom was not the greatest as far as size or amenities, but it was clean and the water pressure and temp were just fine.

The surrounding neighborhood is actually really cute if you go to the back side of the hotel. It's clearly a university area. Though the metra stop is very close by, a cab ride to the Magnificent Mile is only about $17, which is good if you're coming back late.

The shuttle driver was friendly, but the shuttle service itself was not reliable. It left late, and then we could not get a ride back because it was after 2 p.m and apparently you have to call for pick-up before 2 p.m. We could have taken the bus but it would require a transfer, and it was cold, so we opted for a cab instead.

I would not hesitate to stay here again. It was fine for me, and my friend felt the same way. P.S. - the free parking is HUGE in Chicago -- most places charge $40 - 50 per 24 hours.

This hotel is no 4 Seasons, but it served its purpose just fine and for a good price.

Room Tip: ask for a lakeview - the view is very pretty

“Not what I expected”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 December 2011

My heart sank when I saw this place in person. The lobby is nice enough, but we had to walk outside the lobby building, past a seedy rundown pool, to another building where our room was on the second floor. Did I mention that there is no elevator? I had a really heavy suitcase to haul up a steep flight of stairs alone.

The room was cleaner than I expected, given the shabbiness of the rest of the place. The hallway smelled terrible, and that smell never went away. The beds were adequate. But really, I felt like I was spending a night at the Bates Motel. Unless you're ready for a walk on the seedy side, I'd give this place a pass.

“Don't spend more than $79 a night...”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 November 2011

people found this review helpful

I only had a week to find a place and couldn't get anything downtown for 3 nights in my price range. Despite the other reviews I decided to take the chance-- besides I got a discount for 3 nights, about $79 a night. Upon reflection I probably overpaid.

The hotel website does not advertise that it's only two blocks from the Hyde Park 51st/53rd St metra stop. Which considering how rundown the place is, you'd think they want to mention the convenience.

When I got there my heart sank, it looks really bad from the outside. I checked in with no problems, but on the way to my room the hallway smelled awful. Like a mixture of standing water, mold, and funky feet. It turns your stomach at first but you get used to it.

Surprise! My room wasn't that bad. It looked and smelled clean, I thought the carpet would be the same horror out in the hall. There were a few problems: coffee grounds were smeared on the table near the pot and some outlets didn't work. My neighbors looked a little shady, since I was alone I made sure I kept the door locked. But overall I was satisfied with the room.

Biggest problem: unreliable wifi. I brought my laptop hoping to get some work done and on the second night it completely stopped working.

The restaurant was okay. Stay away from the french fries, they're little grease traps.
