“Rough Around the Edges”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

I have stayed at this hotel several times, the last time being a few years ago when it was quite nice. It’s not what it used to be and needs a renovation and some service improvements.

Good points:

Location is superb. Guest room was spacious and had in-room coffee. Television was enormous. Room was equipped with an ironing board and iron, and a safe. Climate control worked well. Bed was comfortable. I had breakfast in the restaurant, which was very good and somewhat reasonably priced.

Bad Points:

The common areas were dinged, worn, and a bit beat up. The room looked the same, with what looked like 10 sloppy coats of paint on the door frames and woodwork. The bathroom had debris, grunge, and hair in the corners (see photos). I could hear someone stomping around in the next room; noise has been a problem every single time I have stayed in this hotel. Internet connection is $12.95 per day, even in the meeting rooms. The room was not well appointed, and there were almost no amenities except for coffee and shampoo. Instead of an iPod dock, for example, there was a CD player which would have been great if I still lugged CDs around like in 1998. There was a robe that was rough and ratty-looking. The water pressure was so weak I had to turn off the second showerhead just to have decent water pressure. The linens were so stiff and rough it was like drying off with a big piece of sandpaper.

The front desk staff seemed begrudging toward simple questions; for example, my invoice was to be emailed and the clerk acted like I was stupid for asking about my total upon checkout.

There was nothing really egregious; no OMG! moments. But if I am paying $200 with few amenities and crappy equipment, the room better be really clean and the service impeccable. It wasn’t. This hotel is a good example of why I have been staying at Westins less and less these days. I have had so many average experiences at above-average prices that I am getting to where I don’t trust the Westin name anymore.

I suggest looking around at the hundreds of hotels in the area before deciding on this one.

Hope this helps.

“Great location - GREAT bed!”

An excellent spot to stay in Chicago. Right on Michigan Ave, close to the lake, close to Rush street. Lots of shopping, restaurants, theatre (we saw Million Dollar Quartet at the Apollo - wow!) and lots of sights. A very comfortable room, good staff , we will be back. Didn't try their restaurant, but that was just because we were out and about so much. We will get there, especially if we stay longer next time.

“Unforgettable stay! Will definitely return some day...”

I stayed at the Westin on Michigan Avenue with my parents when visiting Chicago in 2002.

It is a fantastic hotel, with modern decor and absolute high class service!

From the moment you enter the lobby you immediately feel the Westin touch. The front desk agents were competent and professional and I will never forget the impact the Doorman had on our stay! He was always smiling and seemed to absolutely love his job...

The Westin on Michigan Ave. is a must stay for anyone who´s visiting Chicago! It is centrally located, and offers great value for 5-star service!

“Great Location, Typical Westin Room”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

While I usually stay in the other Westin (River North) because it's closer to where I do business in town, that was all booked up this time. And I'm glad it was, because the Michigan Avenue location is vastly nicer than the River North. Loads of great restaurants and shopping nearby. Make sure to hit Ditka's for the Pot Roast nachos!

Back to the Westin... outstanding service upon arrival, including accomodating my incredibly early check-in (9 AM). Typical Westin room, but among the more-recently updated hotels. Everything was where it was supposed to be, and nice and clean. Only annoying thing was my noisy neighbor, who I could hear through the wall. But that means he could hear me, too. Meh. Had a great view looking straight up at the Hancock Tower, which is right next door. Take the $15 ride to the top. Worth it for the spectacular view. Great restaurant downstairs with an amazing and affordable wine list. Not sure if they had any kind of happy hour. Lobby was always busy. No free coffee other than in-room; coffee stand in the lobby sells Starbucks but isn't a Starbucks. Will definitely return.
