I read a lot of reviews before booking three nights at the Essex. We were traveling with two small children so I opted for the family suite and we were pleasantly surprised. The room was small and the hotel is older, but we liked the classic feel. The suite consisted of two rooms, three queen/full beds in total. Both rooms had a tv, which was nice. Yes the bathroom (and bathroom sink!) were very small but served our purposes (two adults, a 3 and 5 year old) just fine.
Valet parking was a bit expensive but we did enjoy the security of the parking garage. We used the shuttle service a few times with great success but it was inconvenient to find a taxi back from a few places. Like other reviewers we were disappointed because the hotel restaurant was closed, but found a convenience store with donuts and a Caribou coffee within walking distance. We also ordered Giordano's Pizza for delivery one night (yum!) and ate out the other times.
Overall, a nice older hotel just down the street from the heart of the Mag Mile. Good if you are looking for a budget stay downtown.
Positives: Price, location, shuttle (one-way), nice pool, sauna and fitness area
Neutrals: Smaller room but nice family suite, older but classy hotel
Negatives: No hot tub, expensive valet, shuttle (one-way), restaurant closed
