My husband and our son recently stayed in the Windy City Urban Inn booking the Bill Zehme Suite. We booked a carriage house apartment expecting enough room for three adults. The reviews posted on Trip Advisor gave the inn exceptional ratings. We were disappointed. The inn is in need of a visit from Extreme Home Makeover. Our suite seemed as if it was furnished with dumpster dive finds. There was mold on the ceiling over the bed in the master bedroom. The carpets, draperies, and rugs were dirty. The dish ware in the kitchen was chipped and dirty. I was thankful that there was no indication of bed bugs, but we saw several centipedes, spiders, and beetles. Our view each morning from our underground bedroom window was one of discarded flower pots and light fixture globes left under the deck that is built for the upstairs apartments. From the barred windows in the living room, we watched homeless men go through the trash on several occasions. Because this room is located in a basement, we were awakened each morning by the upstairs guests in the other two apartments. The bathroom was small. No one came to clean our room each day. We had to ask for someone to come for our wet towels because there was not enough room for the towels to be hung to dry. For the $200 per night (includes taxes), this B&B did not live up to our prior experiences of more exceptional locations in Chicago, particularly in Lincoln Park. Oh, and did I mention the parking? The B&B boast of free parking on the street (if you can find a spot-it took us at least 20 minutes or more) and the use of a parking garage. But, they failed to mention that you have to move your car each day by 8:45 AM if you use the parking garage. If you have an SUV forget parking on the street. The inn is currently for sale. Perhaps the new owners will put more effort into restoring the potential of this lovely home for its guests.
