“Excellent Service & Good Location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 January 2011

I stayed at the Flemish House Hotel B&B in November, 2010, in the Garden Suite. I was a bit concerned, as it is a below ground suite (ie: basement). However, the apartment was lovely, very comfortable and there was sufficient natural light. We also liked the private entrance.

The host, Mike, was wonderful and while he certainly respected guest privacy, he made himself available to answer any questions we had and was extremely professional, prompt, and helpful.

I received a special, winter/off-season, rate & it was wonderful, making a five (5) night stay most affordable.

There are good restaurants in the neigbourhood (ie: Bistro Zinc) and there is also a good selection of grocery stores. So you can purchase items to keep in the fridge, as we did, to prepare breakfast (if you opt not to take the breakfast option of the stay) or a light meal, as the apartments are well outfitted with a good selection of equipment to prepare a meal.

The public transportation to downtown and key destination neighbourhoods is excellent. The Clark/Division station is a short walk away and the #151 bus is convenient for downtown and Lincoln Park. The #151 stops on Lakeshore Drive. Bus #36 too, which you can catch on State, is a quick ride downtown. However, it is centrally located to walk to many attractions.

I would certainly stay at the Flemish House of Chicago again.

“Heart and soul of Chicago”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 December 2010

The innkeepers were accomdating in my late-evening arrival. I found the place pleasantly set up with food in the refigerator and tolietries in the bathroom, which you would expect in a 5-star hotel. What I found extremely beneficial was the size of the room, it's more like an apartment, and the character and decor of the place. It gives you a real sense of old Chicago and its history, the hardwood floors, the window casements, etc.

Location + amenities: Very close to the Red Mile and public transportation to downtown Chicago. Close distance to shoreline. Awesome neighbourhood for a walking tour.

The only complaint I have of this place was not meeting the innkeepers in person.

“Charming B&B!!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 December 2010

As soon as our cab turned down the street I knew this was going to be so grand and it was! From the lovely, quiet, architechturally stunning neighbourhood, to the personal hand written notes from the apartment owners, this was a home away from home which made our 5 day trip so delightful.
The building is loved, the restorations are tasteful, the service was personal and so welcoming. Tom and Mike had thought of everything from an excellent binder filled with suggestions about where to go, to what to see and how to do it well, to the candels in the room. When I opened the first door into the building after treasure hunting for the key ( the first personal note from Tom) I actually squealed with delight and I'm not a squealler ! We walked up an old beautiful staircase to 3F where the door was left slightly open for us, a light was on to welcome us and it was warm and filled with the slightest hint of incence. What an intro! The location is perfect for walking everywhere and it's close to eats and sites and subways. The neighbourhood is so interesting, This was quiet comfort and so affordable. You truly do get far more than you pay for. I have stayed at some very high end , expensive hotels but this little "Flemish House" was the best of the best. Thanks to Tom and Mike for creating such a great space for travellers. You are great ambassadors for Chicago. I highly recommend this apartment style accomdation.

“This is a delightful and wonderfully located BnB with apartments in the Gold Coast area of Chicago”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 December 2010

We have enjoyed this comfortable, well-maintained BnB on 3 or 4 occasions for a weekend or for a week. It is not a typical BnB in that there is no common area. Each of the studios and one bedroom apartments has a it's own kitchen and bathroom. The rooms are thoughtfully furnished and the proprietors are knowledgeable about the wonderful neighborhood that they are in...half a block from Lake Michigan and the Oak Street beach and easy walking distance to a variety of restaurants and entertainment. Definitely a very good alternative to the increasingly expensive and less homey hotels in this area

“A little gem in the heart of Chicago”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 October 2010

This was an absolutely beautiful historic home to stay at. Mike was wonderful and made us feel right at home. Everything was explained about the room and then he respected our privacy. The room was so lovely to come home to in the afternoon and so close to restaurants and the navy pier - only a 15 minute walk. Plenty of suggestions in the Welcome Book for dinner and leisure and shopping. We were pleasantly surprised to be able to do our washing here - we just had to ensure washing machine was free for the housekeeper during certain times. Excellent! This home has character and the bed was so comfortable. Mike told us some history of the home which was very interesting and they have decorated the rooms wonderfully. The breakfasts that were supplied were very generous and there was no way you could eat them all. Plenty to choose from too! This would be a place we would love to come back to. Chicago is a very beautiful city to visit and there is so much to do. Visit the free zoo at Lincoln Park - well worth it. Visit the Navy Pier - plenty of family fun. Plenty of beautiful walks around the city and lovely architecture of the beautiful old homes.
