“Very impressed!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 October 2010

I cannot say enough good things about House 5863. It is beautifully decorated, clean, and the price was an absolute steal for Chicago. The neighborhood is lovely and has tons of shops and restaraunts. There are two train stations within walking distance, not to mention the lake. We parked for free on the street (no permit required) which saves so much money compared to a hotel downtown! Not to mention the peace and quiet of a more residential neighborhood. We slept with our window open to enjoy the fresh fall air and never woke up once to traffic noise or loud guests banging home in the middle of the night (which has happened many times downtown!). The staff was lovely and present every morning to be sure the guests had what they needed. There was even a laptop with a printer and internet access for guests to use free of charge. The kitchen was fully stocked with everything you could ever want to eat or drink and free for the taking whenever you like. We felt like we were spending the weekend in the posh apartment of a friend rather than a B&B/hotel. I would absolutely recommend House 5863 and will definitely be returning myself!

“upscale, clean, comfortable, and a great value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 August 2010

Visiting our son in the Andersonville section of Chicago, there really is very little in the way of hotels. So we were pleased to find this upscale B&B just a one mile walk from his apartment and close to the train and bus lines. The rates were as good or better than hotels, and a lot better quality rooms and amenities, so an excellent value. If you have any mobility issues, be aware that the five bedrooms, living room, and kitchen are all on the second floor. The decor is modern and everything was fresh and clean. There is a deck for enjoying coffee or drinks. The one thing that was odd was that when we arrived there was no one to greet us or orient us to the place. It seems that other guests kind of fill in informally for the owner, which worked out in the friendly B&B atmosphere, but was quite different from our other B&B experiences. The kitchen is well-stocked with large boxes of cold cereals, breads, bowls of fresh fruit, milk, OJ, condiments, eggs, etc. Pastries appear on the counter under cake domes. So instead of your being served (or having a small buffet presented) each morning, you are on your own to make your own breakfast. Which worked out OK, but again was a little unexpected. There is a computer with a printer available for guest use, which is convenient for printing out boarding passes. We had pleasant experiences with all the guests, and did eventually meet George the owner on our last day. There are plenty of excellent eateries in the Andersonville section on Clark and Foster.

“A good find with a few kinks!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 November 2008

Our son and daughter-in-law live only a few blocks away so this place was a real find for us. It has the feel more of a 'homestay' or apt. rental than a B&B as there is no one there in residence to help or guide. Guests have the run of the place 24 hrs a day!
This is good and bad...we loved being able to use the living room with large screen TV, fully-stocked kitchen , and sundeck as if it were our own. However, when our TV wouldn't work in our room, when the computer went down in the living room, and when we needed more toilet paper and were unable to find any supply--it was difficult to get our needs met. The owners were very accomodating--we dealt with George who was extremely competent and cooperative--but we had to "find" them by calling them and asking them to take care of these needs!
Other than that, the place was fantastic--decor is IKEA modern with nice artistic touches. We'll definitely use it again ESPECIALLY if they take care of the "kinks" we mention!

“"A great B & B in a great neighbourhood"”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 October 2008

My wife and I are Seniors (70) and I picked this B & B from the web taking into account all the reviews on Tripadvisor. We spent 4 nights here and enjoyed meeting 2 other couples and a couple of young men from Spain.

It is an easy walk to the rail station and a comfy ride to the City.

I am surprised at the comments of Pete 777 from N.Y.C who said he never saw anyone. George, the Manager has his office on site out back and was there most of the day while we were there. He replaces items used from the kitchen each morning (You have to see this kitchen to believe it!) and a young lady comes in, usually after most people have gone for the day, and does the cleaning etc.

Everything was clean, clean, clean and enough food in the kitchen to setup a small supermarket, well almost!.

The only thing that could be a problem for some people, mostly elderly is the long flight of stairs up to the living area, but George did offer to meet us there and take our bags up for us.

We would love to come back to Chicago and would be delighted to stay at the House 5863 B & B, again.

Keep up the great work George.

“BUYER BEWARE”

Just a warning for anyone thinking about staying here. I reserved a room in May for Labor Day and was charged the full amount. When I had to change my plans A FULL 2 MONTHS PRIOR to the date of my reservation, House 5863 kept my money until after Labor Day, at which point they still charged me 50% of the cost. This is an absurd practice, especially 2 months out. Obviously, they're hard up for cash and not doing well enough to make a living by simply charging people for actual services rendered.
