I figured since I was travelling by myself, no lady to impress, I'd try staying at a budget hotel out of the city a bit, within easy reach of the EL. It's about 3 blocks to the Orange Line of the CTA. Having to cross Pulaski can be a bit dangerous, especially with all the idiotic Illinois drivers that don't give a damn about anything.
The staff was short, and quite unaccomodating. I arrived before the strictly enforced 3:00 pm check in time, and being on foot I was just ready to rest and refresh a bit. I was horded away from the check in counter and told just to sit in the lobby area. Not too mention, three girls behind the counter seemed to be more into messing with each other's hair than of being of any help.
Finally got to check in at 2:30, which I seemed to get a scolding for. The room was, "retro" to say the least. The bathroom is a joke, with no room to even place a small travel bag with razor, shaving cream, toothbrush, etc. The toilet is something similar to what you may encounter as some old run down truck stop.
On the sign outside it says rates from $39.99. Having paid overt $60/night on Priceline for a single, what they called king bed, that more like a double, that I may add had unfitting sheets on it, I inquired when the rate it ever $39.99. The front desk girl said it never was and was just to get people to stop in, and that she had never seen the rate below $60, what I paid on Priceline. Nice to know the owners are coniving, misleading cheats.
The continental breakfast was nothing more than toast, plain bagels, and two selections of cereal in big plastic containers, that you had to ask for milk at the front desk for.
Hallways were dark and dingy and only had one way out, back past the front desk where the snickering, loud, laughing front desk girls leaned toward each other and spoke in Spanish, probably about me.
My room was never serviced over my stay, and the maid out on the hallway that knew no English simply pointed at her cart as if to help myself with whatever I needed.
I wouldn't recommend it unless you have to.
