Now I remember why I was SO ANGRY when I bought the frozen, grocery version of Home Run Inn pizza. I'm in Chicago for a conference, and went to the original HRI for dinner last night. Hadn't been in about 20 years. OMG! My first bite was like falling in love all over again! This pizza is just delicious. I mean DELICIOUS. You don't need extra anything. They are generous with the cheese, meat, veggies. The crust is amazing. I have tried pizza in New York, Philly, and so many other places, but NO PLACE beats Chicago pizza. I'm not just talking about deep dish or stuff (which people often equate with Chi-town). I mean, those are signature Chicago pies, but we also enjoy a good, thin-crust pizza, and these guys have it DOWN!
The restaurant is in a real, Chicago neighborhood...meaning everything is not pretty and sanitized for tourists. The residents are very diverse. The traffic can be heavy, and it can be a little scary depending on what time you go, but it is worth it. This place is famous and its customers are very diverse (hispanic, black, white, etc). The building is older. The service is polite. They sell t-shirts and stuff like that.
Now, back to my gripe about the frozen HRI pizzas. Okay, so they are better than half of the fresh pizzas you can get in most places, but they don't do the fresh HRI pizzas justice. If you get to the city, and you are looking for a good way to see "the real Chicago," look this place up. This is truly a Chicago landmark. If you like pizza, you gotta try Home Run Inn. Oh yeah, and they have a whole line of appetizers, alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, and pastas.
