“Don't even think about it”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 September 2010

As I write this I am in bed CRINGING. I was aware this was going to be bad just because it was way to homegrown for me. Very nice people TRYING to run it but its basically a collapsing house where they try to rent out themed rooms. I had the misfortune of being in a "garden room " which means BASEMENT hole. I should have turned around and left but then I thought "how bad could it be." After a few drinks around 1 am i get back and think - well at least the bed will be comfortable. I pull back the comforter and top sheet and find black hairs all over the bed and the main base sheet covered with YELLOW stains. Horrified, I call the main number and the woman is very apologetic, but says that nobody is "awake" now so they can't do anything... That they would change the sheets tomorrow. Seriously disgusting. There is just NO WAY this can happen in any reputable place... I have been laying all night on a towel on my bed not sleeping just skeeved out. This place has no business whatsoever renting even the cheapest rooms like this. Steer Clear.

“Was much better with the old management/owners No long just gay men”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 July 2010

The location is perfect being in boyztown. I used to stay here a lot before the Hawthorne Terrace opened up. Two gay guys used to run it and every time I stayed there it was only gay men that stayed there which I lvoed, especially meeting new friends during breakfast. The room were small but since I wasn't in the room much anyway, it was something I could live with and the place was clean.

Once the hawthorne terrace opened, I started staying tehre when I was in the area instead, mainly because it was a little more private and had a parking garage next door and a fitness center.

I stayed there last year because a friend wanted to check it out. I was disappointed in how things had changed. Even though it is in the heart of boyztown, it is no longer owned by gay men. The people staying there are no longer exclusively gay men.

I would recomend for those wanting to stay in the area to just stay at the Hawthorne terrace on broadway. You can book the room right on best westerns site and your reservation is guranteed with a confirmation number immediately.

“Ok but not Great”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 April 2010

I would rate this a "C" Its acceptable but nothing great although it's location is perfect if you are gay, is in heart of gay district on Halstead Street. The rooms don't look as good as what is on their website. Bathroom acceptable but rather basic. The reservation process could be better, just confirm that it has been made. My biggest complaint was the parking. There is no offstreet parking here!!!!! On the website they say they give you a free parking pass. What that is, it's a neighborhood parking pass that allows you to park overnight on the streets in the neighborhood and you have to move the car by a certain time in the morning. I always did manage to find a parking spot but sometimes spent a half hour and even then had to walk several blocks, so just be aware you could be walking several blocks in the rain or snow. Were it not for the location I probably would not stay here.

“Everything a Bed and Breakfast Should Be”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 October 2009

I came up for a three day weekend and was amazed at everything about this place. First, to receive a call three hours before arrival regarding the weather and an offer to help bring in my bags from my car was impressive but unnecessary. My hostess Joy was delightful and engaging. I got the full run down of the place after I arrived. While parking my car, she took all my bags upstairs to the room...not typical of bed and breakfast experience.

The home itself was beautiful, well appointed, cozy, and very clean. The friendly atmosphere was laid back and comfortable. The kitchen area was impressive and offered a variety of breakfast foods and beverages for the taking. For a bed and breakfast, I found the bedroom spacious, yet cozy and comfortable. GREAT BEDDING is always a plus in my book. I couldn't believe how great this place was at half the cost of the closest okay hotel.

I look forward to coming back up to Chicago in December and hope to stay again.

“Loved it”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 September 2009

We were very pleased with the Villa Toscana. We had told them when we would arrive so they were there to greet us. To be honest, that was the last time we saw the staff until it was time to leave. Since we never had a problem, that suited us just fine. There was always fresh coffee in the morning, croissants and fresh fruit and our room was always cleaned and stocked when we returned later in the day. Sitting outside on the porch with our morning coffee was one of our favorite parts of each day. The Boystown neighborhood was charming and the walk to Wrigley Field was quick and easy. There is every shop imaginable nearby. We were originally promised parking passes but were told they were now in limited supply so we got passes for two days and had to park at a nearby garage for $20 a day (quite a deal compared to most places we saw in Chicago.)
We stayed in the Venetian room and the bed was comfy and the bathroom quite adequate for our needs. There was enough space to unpack the bags and feel at home for a few days. The TV was well placed. (We did have some trouble figuring out the stations for the television and there was no info to help us.) The inn was very quiet. We heard doors closing a few times but never heard voices or tv's. We could have stayed within a few blocks of the hotel and had a fine vacation but the proximity to the red line made a trip to downtown a breeze.
We had a great trip to Chicago and I credit our stay at Villa Toscana for a large part of our ability to relax and enjoy ourselves.
