I was in Chicago w/ no hotel reservations the weekend of Pitchfork, so every hostel was booked. My boyfriend and I came across this historic/run down hotel that didn't look too bad, and it was only 35/night.

DO NOT let the lobby fool you. Back in the 30s, it was beautiful, with marble floors and high ceilings. The man at the front desk was literally in his 90s. But once you step out of the "elevator," all bets are off.

It had the worst water damage I've ever seen in a building. Ever. There were crackheads everywhere. The sheets were totally stained with who knows what. White dried substances on just about everything. Tub did not work, but I would not have touched it anyways. The building swayed with the wind and it wasn't even a windy day.

We went to explore, got about 10 feet and saw a sign on our neighbor's door that read "STAY OUT OF MY ROOM AND LEAVE MY STUFF ALONE OR I'LL KILL YOU. THIS IS YOUR LAST WARNING."

We stayed about 3 hours then got the hell out of there. Looking back, it was so horrific that I'm glad I stayed there because it's a good story to tell friends.

We stayed in the New Jackson Hotel back in 2001. We were traveling with 4 friends and we needed a place to sleep when we arived in Chicago. The New Jackon Hotel was close to the centre and cheap...! We were amazed by the hotel, it looked like it used to be nice back in the 1930's! The elevator, walls, carpet and the rooms had not been redecorated or cleaned since! But we were tired (and poor students). We planned to stay for 2 nights, but left after one. The people in the hotel looked like they just got back from the set of a cheap gangster movie. At night we were woken up a couple of times by woman(who looked like they were on crack) knocking on our door and asking if we wanted some company.....yeah the "No Soliciting" sign in the lobby was clearly not effective! I would not advise anyone to stay at tis place. I was surprised to see that it is till in business in 2010.

I lived in a building a few doors down and got to enjoy it's inhabitants every time I walked by to the train . Do not stay here. Tourists beware of it's cheap price. On the map it looks like it's in a good location. But it's a literal hell hole in a otherwise decent neighborhood. This place should be avoided by anyone not wanting to smoke or purchase crack .

The person who wrote the first comment was dead on. We went there and the desk clerk walked us to a room. We turned on the lights and roaches went everywhere. There was a huge fur ball on the bed. The bathtub had been ripped out and was gone. There was crack or something all over the floor. The desk clerk told us not to come out of our room alone, to call him and he would come get us. Needless to say, we did not stay, and got out of there as soon as we could. DO NOT stay here. This place should be condemned. It is nothing but a big crack house. There were people laying in the stairways.
