“Bright colors and Art”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 August 2008

This guest house, which takes only female visitors, is located on the second floor of a large, 100-year old home in the North Lawndale neighborhood in Chicago. It's about five miles from downtown and two blocks from an El stop. The neighborhood is ethnic and has vacant lots and foreclosures, but I didn't have any trouble coming or going. (Having a car helps for evening trips.) The price was right.

The owner is an artist and has a gallery on the first floor. The second floor has three bedrooms, all with bright colors and original art; a bathroom with a clawfoot tub; and a kitchen and living room. I stayed in the middle bedroom with a double bed. It was comfortable and relatively quiet. (The El is nearby but you get used to it.) It was very convenient to have the kitchen because I could eat after coming home from my conference or have a snack in the evening. There is reading material and a TV in the living room for guests. No phones or TV in the bedrooms.

This is a unique place to stay for a person on a budget who doesn't mind an inner city neighborhood. You can find photos of the guesthouse on website of the gallery, Urban Art Retreat in Chicago.

“Not worth saving a few bucks”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 February 2008

Although the price was dirt-cheap at $35.00 a night, it certainly wasn't worth saving a few bucks. The "retreat" is actually located in a rough part of town with bars on everyone's windows, abandoned burnt-down buildings, and gated front yards. I had to pay in advance by mail with a check. They almost never answered the phone. When I arrived, the manager told me she over-booked and I'd have to stay in a storage-type area just through a massive pile of junk that she called an office. It was freezing cold. The manager slept in the room next to me with no door on her room. There was no lock on my door. The smoke detector beeped the entire time I was there from a low battery that she didn't want to bother changing (even though I offered to help with the ladder). She also had a dog that shed all over the couches in the lounge. I never got a receipt for my visit because she couldn't find it. Although I wasn't expecting luxurious accomodations, it would have been nice to at least have some level of decency, professionalism and safety. Instead, I felt like I was staying with a crazy aunt. To her credit, she was a very sweet woman but just didn't have it altogether.

  • Liked — I didn't like anything about it except the price.
  • Disliked — The total disorganization and unprofessionalism.

I am sorry these folks didn't have a good time here. They didn't say any of these things to me when they left but indicated everything was o.k. I don't usually have people stay in the room they stayed in but they wanted to stay here anyway. I was full. The office they had to walk through to get to and from their room is very messy. I don't normally let people into the office. I work very hard and I am the messy office type. I get a lot done but don't have much time to clean up the office. The lounge area they refer to is the front gallery. In between shows, it is haphazard and my doggies like to hang out in there. I could sweep 2 or more times a day and still not keep up with the hair. However, the doggies do not go on the 2nd floor which is where Sisters' Place is located, not on the first floor. No animals are alowed on the 2nd floor where women stay. I keep the 2nd floor neat and tidy. I wish they had said something to me about how unhappy they were with the acommodations, I might have refunded their money.
