We ended up unexpectedly in Sandpoint on a Saturday afternoon with no hotel reservations, two dogs, and a 93 year old who was fading fast. The Best Western Edgewater had the last pet room in town and although it was more than we usually spend (LaQuinta is a great deal for dog travelers), we took it. The room was on the ground floor on the wing farthest from the lobby with a small patio overlooking the marina, bay and mountains. The sliding doors opened to a large grass area where my normally aloof Maltese fell madly in love with Charlie the Canadian Westie next door. Super easy early morning and late night constitutionals for the beasts from this room.
The best part of our stay (besides the view and warm water swimming in the lake) was the amazing food from the restaurant. We ordered room service twice and ate on the patio watching the moon rise over the sailboats. I like to cook, and resent paying for expensive meals unless it's better than what I can make at home. We had Portuguese Clams and a shredded pork burrito with a mole-syle sauce, both of which were fantastic, and crawfish chowder that, seriously, I would consider driving six hours back there to have again. Amazing flavors. There are also other great restaurants within walking distance.
I am extremely sensitive to mold and musty rooms so I was apprehensive about staying here because of other reviews, but our particular room had no problem with this. A/C worked fine, it was 90 degrees outside, and I like rooms cool. One potential problem for this set of ground floor rooms (a floor below the main parking area) is no elevator to take suitcases up and down. You have to carry them on the stairs. This meant I had to carry my Dad's oxygen concentrator machine which was a bit of an ordeal. I didn't hear the trains, but that's probably because the oxygen concentrator is louder than anything BNSF could send by.
For us, the dog friendly space, the great food and the stunning view made up for the other inconveniences.
