“Interesting and Historic Fort”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 December 2011

We went over for just a day trip but it was well worth the trip time fron Savannah. The fort plays a special part in Civil War history and is very unique. The scenery is fantastic. There is a camping area, which we did not have a chance to enjoy, and there are picnic areas with a playground. A very nice trip with something for everyone.

“Perfect Tent Campground”

This is a Perfect Campground if there ever was one. It is quiet, and clean, and far enough from civilization while only being a few miles from a gas station, a grocery store and a fast food place if you need it. Firewood is plentiful to keep you warm on the cool nights, or just have a fun time around the fire anytime of the year. Each tent site has a "pad" surrounded by rail road ties with nice smooth, level, root-free dirt. Every site has a steel pole for hanging lanterns or trash bags or whatever you'd like (i built a quick clothesline), as well as a picnic table and fire ring, with a grate for cooking. Each site has water as well as 120v/240v power (even tent sites). Hiking or bike trails close to the camping area, as well as boat ramp for power boats and canoe’s or kayak’s. Overall, I will say this: I will certainly be returning to this campsite again, very soon. (Note: this site is 2 1/2 hours away from me, but well worth the travel time)

Room Tip: Tent campers chose a campsite on the right hand side of the loop (nearest the river) and you wont ha...

“Great Cottages to go along with the camping...”

We stayed at one of the three cottages available at this state park. Access is through the same coded gate that is used to get to the camping area. The cottage itself is several feet off the ground, so there are stairs to contend with to haul your belongings in (there is a ramp access cabin as well) but it does allow you a better view of the marsh (best view is from cabin #2). The kitchen utensil inventory was the best we have seen anywhere in a rental. Fully furnished an DishTV satellite connected. One of the best features of this two bedroom cottage is the TWO bathrooms. There is a fire pit that can be used between the entrance to the cottage area and the cottages (we missed seeing it the first night) and grills and picnic tables at each cottage.

The park is very nice. The Red Bird trail is a nice level three mile walk. Every person we that worked there that we talked to was helpful and friendly. I would consider staying here any time I was visiting Savannah.

“Perfect pit stop between South Carolina & Florida”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 January 2011

This is a great place for pit stop if you're traveling down the east coast to Florida. It's about 4 hours south of Murrell's Inlet, SC.

We had reserved a site big enough for our 38 ft trailer for 5 days over the US thanksgiving weekend. Just a word of warning, when you reserve a site here, you aren't reserving a specific site, just one somewhere in the campground that will fit your equipment. When you get there, the park ranger checks you in and then lets you go pick your site...they're first come first serve. There's nothing to prevent someone camping in a tent from taking a site big enough for a 40 ft RV. I'm sure most times it's not an issue but this weekend the campground was full, as was just about every other campground in the south.

Luckily we got there early enough on the Wednesday to find a site big enough for us still available. There were only a couple to choose from but we were quite happy with the one we got, it was huge! Even though our site was a pull thru and relatively easy to get in, the trees proved to be a pain to get around on the way out!

Despite being full for Thanksgiving, it never felt crowed there and although the partying got loud, it never got crazy. The camp hosts managed to keep the bathrooms nice and clean most of the time which is saying alot because they were well used that weekend.

Since the campground is on an island in the salt water marsh, there were lots of short trails to walk or bike. There's also Fort McAllister to explore. Just outside the park there's lots of neighbourhoods with gorgeous waterfront homes to see...highly recommend just hopping on your bike and checking them out.

From the park it's only 30 mins to Historic Savannah or 1 hr. to Tybee Island. If you like the beach, go to Tybee Island. It's worth the visit, another gorgeous beach on the east coast.

“Great Launch point into Savannah”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 August 2010

This was our first stay at this park. We stayed in a travel trailer with our family. The campground hosts kept the bath houses very clean. They are doing a great job. If you like history, or boating and fishing this is definitely the campground for you. It is about a 35 minute drive into the historic area of Savannah and about an hours drive out to Tybee. But it really did not feel like an hour, with all the beautiful Marsh land to look at. This is now one of our favorite state parks and we will definitely come here again.
