I wonder sometimes about peoples' expectations. I wonder what they would say about some of the places I stayed in on Route 66 back in the 70s. Remember when the beds had quarter slots for a "massage"? That was fun as a kid. This place is very fancy for its price, but people will complain about anything.
Firstly, of course if a "low ball" price is advertised, you can expect extra charges for accomodating extras like a pet (!) or a handicapped access room. Those prices are for SINGLE rooms, single occupancy. (You'd think some people had never stayed at a motel before!) . Free breakfasts at hotels, unless you are staying well into the 4 star range, are minimal and I never waste my time. Were you expecting like what your mother made? This place far exceeded my expectations, because I had "average" expectations.
I was on the phone with an agent from Hotels.com but the hotel's sigh was showing a lowball price lower than she was offering, so I said I'd call back after checking on it. I was immediately greeted by "Sunny", a very enthusiastic gentleman. (Maybe the owner?). I asked if there were any rooms at that price and he said yes, and I ALWAYS, (nicely), ask "Would it be okay if I look at the room first? I'm sure it'll be fine but if you don't mind...." and THIS is when you decide if the room is to your standards.
He cheerfully gave me a key-card, I opened the room to the scent of a cleaning chemical, which I did not find offensive (smelled like scrubbing bubbles) but the fan was off so it was a bit strong at first (but smelled clean!). And it went away after a few minutes with the A/C on.
(By the way, I have a special appreciation for effective A/C since I am not heat-tolerant, and even at near 100 degrees, I had to turn this unit down after just a short while. It was EXTREMELY effective on a hot, humid Georgia summer day.)
I did the regular "bed bug" and bathroom checks most travelers do. It was great, if not a bit "lavishly" decorated. Carpet, bedspread, drapes, and chair of bright, complex and competing colors and designs, but all thoroughly clean and new looking, rather than offensive, I found it rather comical and endearing. It seemed everything was brass or guilded in some way, and my room even had a real granite countertop and tile in the bathroom (which I find unnecessary in a budget motel). The furniture was of the dark wood with brass handle variety, complex brass lamp fixtures with glass globes, mirrors with frenched frames, "art" with brass framing, posts on the bed (you get the picture, there are cultures that appreciate ...um...much more colorful decor than the sleek, crisp scandinavian style that you get at the more expensive hotels at twice this price).
Everyone has a different idea of what "luxury" or "tacky" or "psychodelic" is. But clean is always clean! My room also had a safe, microwave, and dorm type fridge, ironing board, iron, hair dryer, coffee maker and high speed wifi (from where I am currently writing this review!) A very comfortable rocker/recliner, a BIG bathtub that you can actually bathe in (rather than the dinky "shower tubs" that most places have). The bed and linens were SO COMFORTABLE that I slept for 10 hours, and I usually can't sleep well "on the road". There was even a telephone in the bathroom, just like Elvis! Come to think of it, the room room kind of looked like it was decorated by The King as well....LOL!
After seeing the note about hidden charges, I checked my receipt, and I was charged ONLY for the room plus the ridiculous tax that ALL STATES gouge travellers with.
Anyone that would expect a hotel to accept pets with no extra charge or questions asked is really being self-centric. Many, many people are allergic or do not appreciate dealing with the noise and care (such as walking the dog at midnight) that pet travellers need.
Those people should seek out pet friendly hotels FIRST, not just expect every hotel to trust that their dog is well trained, quiet, and won't cause a costly stain. I wouldn't allow pets if I owned a hotel...or maybe keep one or two rooms, but of course those would have to cost more due to the extra cleaning and be WAAAY in the back where it did not bother the other guests.
Cannot comment on the pools as I don't stay at hotels to go for swims. I also don't bother with their "continental" breakfasts. I don't expect that kind of pampering at $40....besides, this place is LITERALLY within a half block of a McDonalds, Krystal (like White Castle), KFC, and several others. There also is a grocery store within a block, so buy your $1 McMuffins when you get ready to leave and re-allign your expectations. My room was spotless, and really large for a budget hotel, and had all the mentioned amenities. It was definately better than the ratty Motel 6s or Super 8s that you sometimes find at the same or higher price located under a bridge or in an industrial district. This is a bargain gem.
I do agree that if someone had a valid complaint, they should be given a partial refund or a discount for a future stay at the chain.
But for this price, to expect a pristine room with no problems, a pool, hot tub, full southern breakfast...for $40??? At that price, one should expect a clean, comfortable room and a good night's sleep; no more, even if they try to add on extra amenities to compete with the 50 other hotels in the area. If you want all the rest of that, quit squeezing these small business owners for every bar of soap; pony up $99 and stay at the Mariott.
Bottom line, VERY clean, extremely conveniently located (but very...festively decorated) hotel at an extremely reasonable price. I stayed during the week and paid 35.99 (plus taxes).
My thought would be to try to ensure a nice room, try to get one of the first few on the first floor near the office, since that's where I stayed (I obviously can't speak for every room on every floor).
The same manager, Sunny, was very motivated to ensure I was happy, and even later in the afternoon was out in 99 degree heat leaf blowing the parking lot to ensure it was clean for the rush of people that come in evening.
I can't explain the others' experiences, unless certain employees are owners (who are always more accomdating) and some are hired (who are never as motivated, let's face it, they don't get paid much.)
I will DEFINITELY be staying here on my way back up from Florida!
