“a wonderful georgia island”

The campground has both pull-through ($36.75) and back-in ($33.60) sites with many long-term snow birds during the winter months ($525/mo). All sites have EWS, there is free wifi and cable at each site, and laundry is $1.50 each for wash and dry. The young girls working in the office seem more interested in surfing the web and listening to their mp3 players that assisting campers. However, campground host is most helpful. There are 20 miles of paved bike trails on the island, an historic district, and several nearby restaurants. There is a small grocery on the island but for the major chains, Brunswick is the closest option.

“Not much has changed”

The bathrooms seem to have been upgraded. But although it is situated in a nice place (there aren't any bad places on the island), and in a state park, it is not operated by the state park system, but a separate "authority." What that means is the campground is just like the commercial ones where there are a lot of big RVs crammed in like sardines. The place allocated to tents and vehicles that are not giant RVs is very small, mostly designated for groups.

The retired people who are in charge after the office closes are not well trained, at least not the couple I encountered. A loud party of latecomers was put next to my site even though this loop was empty except for me. They ended up with four cars and two tents in that small site, and after carousing until nearly 2 am, had about two dozen empty beer cans on the ground. I had moved to another nearby site, to try to get away from the noise and get some sleep. At midnight the retired couple arrived at my site to scold me for ten minutes for changing sites. Said I should have gone for help. At midnight???? And then they left, saying they made hourly rounds. This was not true, and the noise continued until the partiers decided to go to sleep themselves.

So, although the bathrooms are better than previously reported, the staff is not.

I left a day early because of this, even though I was paid for another night.

Unfortunately they have a monopoly on camping on the island. There is not even a good nearby site on the mainland so you can do day visits.

Bottom line: if you have a giant RV and can shut out very close neighbors with your walls, you might be satisfied here. Otherwise, not.

“Don't believe what you have read!!!!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 October 2011

I was also a little worried to spend a much needed vacation and have it be terrible after reading the reviews of some. Well, I will be going back to stay here at the campground again!! i will give you the good and the bad. Good first.
1. The campground is clean and when not raining, the dirt and leaves are fine to walk on. The campsites are close, but for the fall when everyone is gone we had H-6 to ourselves with no neighbors around and it is a great campsite.
2. The hosts were great. Very friendly and helpful and they are always around and DO patril the grounds all the time.
2. Noise level was always quiet. A few dog barks but nothing for long. One night some women campers got a bit loud but they were talked to and it was over as quickly as it started.
3.The bathrooms. Despite what others have written, for a "public" bathroom, it was the cleanest I have ever been in. The showers were also clean and I never saw one thing that was not clean the whole time we were there. Always stocked and heat was running inside so you could stay warm after your shower. Plugs for blow dryers and straighteners. Lots of mirrors. My husband said the same about the men's bathroom too.
4. The pier is across the street but you do have to walk a little ways to get to the actual beach. You will walk past marsh land for about a half a mile but the walk is nice. Go around the corner when you come to the beach to the right for that is the BEST picture taking beach and the driftwood is amazing. Go at low tide. At high tide it is covered with water.

Cons if you wanna call them that....
1. The internet is horrible! I guess every camper had a laptop because the service being WiFi was worse than dial up, but then you really shouldn't come camping to be on your computer anyway so I didn't complain. Some RV people told me the cable was fuzzy, but I also didn't go camping to watch TV.
2. Don't buy anything at the "store" at the campground. The IGA is not that far away and you can get just about anything there.
3. Yes, the girls that work in the office were not friendly at all when I checked in and it sorta made me feel bad but I also talked to them when I left and they were both very nice. Maybe they just had a bad day?

To sum it up, if you are in a motor home and you are a camping person who doesn't want to get "dirty", then maybe you should come here. This is a very old time family campground like my parents took me to when I was young. Doesn't need updated at all! It is perfect for the price and the location!! But if you want to have a great camping experience and have water and electric, which I did, then go!! You can camp in the very back without water and it is very secluded. Whether you have a RV or a tent, H-6 was a great spot!!
the island is the best place to go if you don't want crowds, commercialism, and want to just get back to nature. Who cares about the $5.00 they charge per day to get on the island! It is well worth it and goes to keep the island beautful!!

Room Tip: H-6 or ask for a campsite in the back. You have to walk a little farther to the bathroom and the bea...

Wow ~ stayed at this campground with my parents as a teenager many years ago for a few summers in a row. Came back with MY teenagers and it was the best experience. Nice amenities, wonderful staff, and so many added site upgrades. The surrounding beaches, fishing piers, restaurants (Latitude 31). A must see is Historic District it is amazing, beautiful, and bike paths on campground & Historic Dist are grand! Take a sailboat dinner evening cruise, ride horses on the beach, or site-see...there's also a terric water park (Summer Waves) for the family ... small but plenty for a days entertainment!

“Campground”

When arriving be sure to stop at the FIRST building, the signs are not clear and there is not a lot of parking for registering. But once parked the campground is nice, quiet and peaceful!! Its beautiful, shady and clean!! I read a lot of comments about the squirrels and raccoon being rude.... we only had one squirrel that wanted to check us out, never seen the first raccoon though. The island has really nice bike paths which tours you round the whole island so you see a little of everything. The only bad thing about this campground is the cablevision SUCKED and so did the wifi... but hey, it is suppose to be camping, right? Over all we had an awesome trip. I will definitely come back!!!!
