We hadn't been back to Jekyll for years--since they started the massive teardown/rebuild project. But we wanted to get away to someplace close by and Jekyll seemed like a good choice. I consulted Trip Advisor and chose the Days Inn based on people's reviews stating it was one of the two hotels with a view of the ocean. In years past we had always stayed at the Buccaneer--mainly because of the rooms with balconies overlooking the ocean. I thought this would be similar. I requested a second floor room Oceanside--and they were even running a special--so the room was around $66--closer to $77 with taxes. The price included continental breakfast.
Check-in was 4 p.m. The desk worker was a very pleasant young lady. She directed us to an elevator in the lobby that took us up to the second floor. Or we could have used the stairs. The lobby elevator deposits you in the upstairs breakfast/dining area--which has a really nice semi-circular arrangement and huge windows overlooking the pools and beyond them--the ocean. We exited the dining area to the right to get to our oceanfront room.
And here was the problem with THAT. Yes--it's an oceanfront room. It's old style--public walkway, two plastic chairs in front of your window from which you can view the ocean. But the only way to view the ocean from your ROOM is to leave your curtains open--which puts you in a fishbowl for anyone who happens to walk by. So much for the ocean view. I found out the next day that we could have gotten an upstairs SUITE (exit LEFT out of the Breakfast Room) for around $99 (before Taxes) for the same night and we WOULD have had a private balcony. At this stage of my life--YES--the upgrade would have definitely been worth it.
The room was clean enough--towels were a bit worn and seemed slightly damp, but that's sometimes the case at the ocean. The bed was clean and comfortable. The carpet---well, I wasn't really comfortable going barefoot on it.The ceiling is those old Asbestos-looking tile things--also a little off-putting--but it's an older room in an older building. The bathroom is STRICTLY utilitarian--the single sink is out in the room with you on the back wall and has practically NO counter--enough space for your toothbrush and toothpaste, but definitely no space for your overnight kit. The bathroom door is also on the back wall----so if you DID leave your curtain open passers-by have a straight shot of the toilet if you left the bathroom door open. television was the old-fashioned kind--not a flat screen--but it worked fine. The television channel list showed HBO--but I couldn't get it to come up in our room. We didn't spend a lot of time watching TV since we were just there the one night.
Employees were VERY nice. I couldn't get the bedside lamp switch to work and they sent someone up IMMEDIATELY to fix it. And he did. Breakfast the next day was fine--the usual assortment of muffins, sweetrolls, bagels, a variety of cereals, fresh bananas and oranges, juice, coffee, and also a waffle maker if you wanted a hot waffle. We really enjoyed the view of the ocean from the breakfast room.
Yes--I'd return to the Days Inn at Jekyll Island. Next time I'd pay extra and get the suite. Even though two of us hardly NEED a suite--it would be worth it for the private balcony.
Room Tip: Second floor has the ocean view--the SUITES are the only rooms with private balconies.
