I stayed at the Atlanta Perimeter Hotel & Suites after I originally had booked the Atlanta W Midtown (this hotel’s sister hotel, both owned by Starwood) in Oct 2011 for a January 2012 stay during a big trade show in Atlanta. I got a phone call on 12/31, saying that the W Midtown had overbooked, and I was moved to the Atlanta Perimeter Hotel & Suites. This was much farther away from my trade show, but by 12/31 there were no other reasonable hotel options left, so I accepted. This was a big mistake on my part, going from what I read is a nice hotel (the W Midtown) to what is an extremely poor offering from Starwood, but I felt like I had no choice. A call to the W Midtown manager got me nowhere, and a call to Starwood also got me nowhere, they explained they would not do anything because I had booked through Hotwire (??) Hotwire offered me 25 Hot Dollars or a refund, that was it. I took the room and the 'generous' offer of 25 Hot Dollars on a future booking.
My biggest problem with this hotel is that I was bitten in my sleep in two different places by bugs. The bites were patterned in a row, 2-3 bites per row, with one set on my wrist and one on my neck. I have photos of my bites. I also took photos of bugs that I found hiding on the backside of the headboard. When the manager helped me switch rooms, the next two rooms had these bugs hiding behind the headboards. I am no expert on bug bites, and I cannot say with certainty whether I experienced bed bugs at the Atlanta Perimeter Hotel & Suites or not, but I was not about to take any chances. The 3rd room appeared OK, and by this time I could not change hotels due to the trade show anyway. Needless to say I did not sleep well the rest of my stay.
My Atlanta Perimeter Hotel & Suites room, an “upgrade” to a suite, was shabby and dirty. Razor hair clippings from a previous guest were on the vanity, there was a dead fly on the floor, which needed vacuuming, and the carpet was old and shabby. There was an old soap wrapper sitting on the 'clean' towels by the shower. The bedding and furniture were worn and stained. The bathroom sink did not drain properly. The tub barely drained at all, my first shower ended up with me standing in a pool of water 2” deep. The heating/AC did not function properly; it seemed only heat would work. It was warm outside when I arrived in Atlanta, and I had to call maintenance to get the AC working (they also fixed all of the other problems that I had like the drains). AC worked until about 3am, when the system reverted to kicking out heat only. The weather cooled down to winter temps after one day, and from then on in this room the ‘heat only’ worked for me. The heating/AC problem surfaced in my 2nd room also, the one I was moved to. It seemed to only kick out heat, but by just turning it off the room stayed just below sauna stage and I didn’t bother calling maintenance over it.
Lastly, the iron did not work, and one of the two TV remotes did not work. All of these issues made the expensive optional bottles of water sitting in the room 'for my convenience' and other expensive optional niceties seem laughable. This environment is not conducive to pampering yourself!
One other issue with the hotel is the free shuttle service within a few miles of the hotel. The only workers who seem to work with you are the drivers, who are great. Any time I called the operator or front desk, I got a different explanation of how long in advance you need to call to arrange for a ride, etc. Some said call the night before, some said to call 30 minutes before, some said call 10 minutes before, no earlier. Some said you could not call in advance at all. It was frustrating and would have been amusing in a strange way had I not counted on those shuttle rides so much to the MARTA station (remember I was staying much farther away from my work location than I wanted to already).
The night manager on duty, who helped my during my stay, was very nice and apologetic. However, when I checked out, I had a few minutes before my shuttle, and talked to the front desk person about all of my troubles. She offered to have the hotel manager call me the next day, when I would be home from my trip, and took my cell phone number. That was a couple of weeks ago, and I still have never received a call from the manager. That closed the book on my experience. I will never stay at this hotel again, and Starwood certainly gave themselves a black eye in my book too.
