Good location (close to I-75) Red Lobster restaurant right next door, many restaurants/store within one mile (down Walnut Ave, so easy to find and not much chance of getting lost, lol.)
Hotel itself is just barely O.K., about a C- if I was grading it. Close to bordering on unacceptable...this is a smoking/non-smoking facility, and the whole place smells musty/stale ...like smoking must have once been allowed everywhere. It's like they just set aside some of the rooms without repainting/recarpeting etc. The smell's still there and it's not pleasant...wasn't actual cigarette smoke, just that stale wet ashtray kind of after-smell that doesn't go away unless you replace everything in the rooms and hallways, top to bottom.
Decor and furnishings all looks like it's really in need of an update...upholstered furniture in rooms is frayed/stained/sagging seats, desk & dresser dinged up, wall paint scratched, smudged, bathroom grout dirty/cracking, scratches & chips in tub/toilet/sink, etc. Place looked clean, just really worn out.
Breakfast was REALLY disappointing-we have always been impressed by Country Inn breakfasts, but this one was not good...pretty obvious corners were being cut. We went down about 10-15 minutes after breakfast opened and the only thing hot was the coffee. "Hot" foods was dry french toast and sausage patties...neither was more than room temperature--they must just take them out of a fridge right when they open for breakfast, and put them in the warmer without preheating. 15 minutes after the place opened the food still had not warmed thoroughly.. There was a microwave there, but the plates were styrofoam so you could not nuke the food to get it hot without melting the plates. Bad news. And that selection of hot foods...where were the biscuits & gravy or scrambled eggs we're used to seeing? Silly to serve french toast as the hot food when there's a waffle iron there. No prepackaged fruit yogurt choices. There was a large glass-fronted refrigerator with 2 (yes TWO) small containers of applesauce. The rest of the refrig was totally empty? Obviously they USED to offer other cold choices) For yogurt, the only choice was a bowl of plain yogurt & a few toppings. Pastries were dried out & yuck. Oatmeal vat was gross--oatmeal looked like brown glue (and wasn't hot, either) No fresh fruit...was a bowl of nasty canned (or jarred?) fruit...whatever it was, it all tasted the same (like canned fruit cocktail. Yuck again.) When you pay for these hotels, you expect the breakfast to be edible. We threw most of our breakfast away. We chose Country Inn over the nearby Courtyard Inn because we like having breakfast in our hotel package...would have done better at McD's drive-thru.
On the upside--the hotel was not a total wash-out...guy at check-in was pleasant, efficient and helpful. The lobby area was nice enough, though also somewhat worn looking and a bit musty smelling (but not as bad as the rooms and hallways.) Fresh cookies were available (individually wrapped, which was a real plus) USA Today were available in the lobby, and a big screen TV in the breakfast room was being enjoyed by several guys watching a football game & eating a carry-out pizza. Room had a newer model, good-sized flat screen TV that worked well. There is a good (although old) microwave and good fridge in room (many hotel fridges do not actually keep things cold--this one had frost formed on the freezer section so was definitely cold in there. ) Things were clean in the room and bathroom, albeit worn out. Nice amenities in the bathrooms (Pantene shampoo and Pantene conditioner, name brand lotion, packets of make-up remover wipes.) Bed was semi-comfortable, but again think the bedding should be replaced to get rid of the stale/musty/old smoke smell. High speed internet was no-hassle to connect (book says to call the desk for the password, but did not need a password...my cheapie netbook had no problem connecting without a password.)
Would I stay here again...no, I would not...unless I read that the whole place went 100% non-smoking AND they did a total refurbishment top to bottom. Too old/too smelly. Too bad...we usually like Country Inns but seems like the standards are slipping at the independently owned ones. Two out of last 3 CountryInns we've stayed at were disappointing.
