“Rooms are in serious need but the property is very nice”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

I gave this an "average" only because of the pool area. It was wonderful. Two pools, one heated one with a ship & waterfall...beautiful. But the rooms? TERRIBLE! Not happy! We checked in to our room & I noticed it was shabby, but we left right away...when we came back I noticed it smelled. Looked around closer, besides the stains on the carpet, comforters, paint in serious need of attention, there was mold on the ceiling in the bathroom. So, I went to the front desk & asked if some of the rooms are better than others? On here there were a bunch of bad reviews but there were a bunch of good reviews too, so i figured I must of just gotten a bad room. He gave me a key to another room...it was WORSE! I came back & he gave me keys to the only 3 other rooms available on the main floor & told me to take my pick. Two of them were just as bad, but one of then was a bit nicer, so we moved there. Luckily Jay(the front desk attendant) was so helpful! Or else I would of packed up & found a new place right then! Esp since we were staying for 6 nights.
Once we moved, things were fine. The room was still in need of paint & a few other things but in general it was "fine". The continental breakfast was actually pretty good. The best part of this hotel is the pool. It looks like a nice resort...maybe a little run down resort, but definitely nicer than any hotels pool I have ever seen.
Oh & bring ear plugs if you want to sleep! The maids carts, etc make all kinds of noise & so getting any sleep is just about impossible with out them!

“A comfortable "home away from home"”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

We stayed at the Clarion from January 11 - 16, 2012, to visit friends who had recently moved into the University Village complex (0.9 miles from our room!). Our king-size bed was very comfortable, and the room had many more electrical outlets (and most had additional extension cords attached) than the average hotel room, which we found very convenient. It also had a nice large sink which is outside the shower/toilet area, which is efficient. Our room was poolside, which provided a very attractive entry (you walk through the spacious lobby right out to the pool area), and because it was winter (very few swimmers!), it was also very quiet. The extensive hot breakfast was very good, but it would have been nice to have a different meat offered, since five mornings of sausage links in a row gets boring! But it is cheerfully and generously served, and there are lots of items (scrambled eggs, grits, hot oatmeal, potatoes, fruit cup, cold cereal, juices, toast, muffins, etc.). The location could hardly have been more convenient for visiting our friends -- we simply had to drive through the University Mall shopping area across the street, and we were at their gate! There are many very nice restaurants in the mall (as well as within walking distance on our side of East Fowler). We particularly enjoyed Jason's Deli, The Taj, and Evos, but there is also a TGIF restaurant right on the motel premises. The staff were extremely helpful and cordial, and we also received great support from the reservations manager when we called ahead with some questions. The few times we needed maintenance assistance (once was for a defective extension cord, and the other was for a drooping shower curtain rack which caused water to drip on the bathroom floor), the situation was remedied immediately. We will definitely stay there again!

Room Tip: Poolside rooms are very convenient to the lobby (and breakfast!)

“Pay your tax to the Squirrel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

We stayed here from 1/31 to 2/4 to visit some relatives in the Tampa area. The room was comfortable but they were 2 double beds, not 2 Queen beds. Very soft, squishy pillows(which I love) 4 to each bed. The maid service was during our breakfast buffet so when we came back from breakfast our room was ready for the day. Only had one slip up and that was because they thought we were leaving a day earlier but a quick call to the front desk and the problem was solved within 15 minutes. The breakfast was good. Scrambled eggs, breakfast potatoes, sausage links, fruit cocktail, grits and oatmeal, along with several different cold cereals. They also served 2% and whole milk and cranberry juice cocktail, orange juice and apple juice. If you sit outside, be prepared to be shaken down by the local squirrels. They are very tame and will take your food. The property was maintained very well and for $50/night(room saver coupon) it was very well priced. The pool looked inviting and saw some children in there but no adults. There is also a separate area for a kiddies area for water activities.

“Average but nothing to write home about!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2012

I stay at the Choice Hotel Chain a number of times per year. I selected this location based on my previous experiences with Clarion Hotels in other areas.

The lobby area was nice and business center is okay but once I was given my room key then I drove to the location of the room. It has only outside entries. The rooms were barely repaired. My A/C did not work properly. The fixtures on the sink was loose and the paint was chipped. The carpet was well worn.

I was informed by the front desk staff that did not start their breakfast buffet until 7:00am. That was too late for my 8:00am appointment. Most Choice location start their weekday breakfasts at 6:00am.

I will look for another Choice Hotel Location the next time that I am in the Tampa Area.
