First I should say I am usually a Hilton person (typically Hampton Inns) but in the Tampa area there are not as many Hilton options, so I decided to give this a try based on reviews/affordability. The staff was very nice, check in was fine, the lobby looked as if it had been recently renovated. The lobby/approach now seems to resemble a Hyatt Place. I got the University of Tampa rate which was $89, wonderful.
The wonder stopped once I walked down a hallway (dirty carpet) to the small elevator (the only one in the lobby area). The doors closed rather quickly which in my opinion is not ideal in a hotel where one has luggage, etc. The room itself was very basic. No fluffy duvet, no mattress pad. There was a patio that overlooked the pool area which looked lovely. However, the screen door did not shut all the way which I imagine during warmer months would create a bug issue. The light in my bathroom kept flickering on and off until the next morning it died all together. There was a flat screen but the satellite did not have good reception for about half of the channels. Room overall looked reasonably clean if basic. The worst bit though I did not discover until the next morning. There was no outlet in the bathroom, nor in the small wall area near the bathroom, nor in front of any mirror. This made it rather difficult to blow dry my hair. I found the toiletries to be very cheap quality too. I was confused by how basic overall everything was...I was under the impression that Courtyards were a step up from Hamptons? I guess not. Area is within 5 minutes of many chain restaurants and a Whole Foods, where I had dinner. Overall, it was not awful, but not so great that I would choose to book there next spring when I am back in town.
