Our unit at Periwinkle Cottages was perfect -- from the moment we arrived, we loved it.
I arranged everything through Kathy, and Mark, her husband (and former Captiva postmaster!), greeted us and made us feel at home. We stayed in the "Heron" cottage and found it cleanly and very well appointed, with all the amenities we needed. The owners provide free bikes, free wifi (but who needs it on vacation?), laundry (a washer, dryer and detergent for a reasonable amount per load - $5), plush beach towels, extra bath towels, and even beach chairs. The guests staying in the other units were also very friendly.
We ended up cooking in most of the nights, with fresh fish bought at The Timbers (10m drive away). Mark and Kathy provide a coffee maker, toaster, microwave and plenty of pots/pans/utensils, so it was a pleasure cooking -- and the dishwasher made it an easy cleanup. The bathroom and bedroom were clean, and we enjoyed the view of the pond from the bed -- there was even a tree frog on our window one afternoon! Mark and Kathy do not live on the premises, but they were always a phone call away -- and I felt very comfortable calling them, and Mark was on the site enough that we could ask him questions then.
The location is on the quieter western end of the island, right by the JN "Ding" Darling Wildlife refuge. It's about a 10 minute bike ride away, and right on an 8-mile loop that's mostly inside the refuge. You can also easily bike to the CROW wildlife rehab center and the shell museum. The town and the general store is a farther bike ride, but doable (we had a little rental car that made longer trips a snap).
The beach is a quick walk from the cottages, and we went there plenty to watch the sunsets and enjoy the scenery. They provide a free parking pass (everywhere else on the island has $2/hour lots) -- but we found it was so close we'd rather just walk. It's a neighborhood beach, and it's usually quite empty. The most people we saw set up down there was probably around 8! And there were plenty of shells on this emptier stretch.
It turned out Mark is an artist, and recommended we stop by his gallery (Tower Gallery) downtown. We went there on our last round of errands and regretted not going earlier! It was a neat little space with the works of more than a dozen artists. Other highlights of the trip: a wildlife kayak tour at Captiva Kayaks, the historic village, fishing rod rental at the Bait Box and the CROW animal hospital!!!
We're definitely looking forward to returning to Sanibel and Periwinkle Cottages! It's the perfect laid-back, relaxing atmosphere (near nature!) we were looking for, with owners who genuinely care that their guests have a great experience. Thanks!
