Arthur Frommer didn’t tell us anything we hadn’t already known. My family has considered Sanibel Island to be the #l vacation spot since 1984 when my husband, daughter and I spent our February school vacation there. In fact, it was Ocean’s Reach, here on the Island, that made us fall in love with Southwest Florida which, in turn, made the area our permanent home once we retired. However, we still treat ourselves to treasured stays at Ocean’s Reach throughout the year. In addition, we have gradually introduced our extended family and friends to this tropical paradise, and now it has become our vacation home.
Every visitor to Ocean’s Reach will share glorious memories of their trip. Besides delighting in the obvious: glorious sunrises and sunsets, direct gulf views, an invigorating lap pool, restaurants for every palate, tropical nature preserves and every outdoor activity imaginable, I never fail to return from a stay without new discoveries that keep Sanibel from becoming predictable. This past trip, while walking the beach, I was amazed to observe hundreds of majestic pelicans balancing like graceful ballerinas on the tips of a bordering pine. In spite of the fact it was mid-January, the Sanibel sun gifted us with a spell of July warmth. Every day was in the mid-80s, and unlike any of our other trips, we could view the sunset directly from the beach at Ocean’s Reach instead of walking up and around the bend. My favorite restaurant has traditionally been the Green Flash on Captiva, but lately we have discovered a Sanibel’s secret. Tucked away in Jerry’s Supermarket is a restaurant featuring breakfast, lunch and dinner with great food including a grouper sandwich to die for and at prices you don’t ordinarily find at a resort.
Anything we can’t find or don’t know is taken care of by the management staff at Ocean’s Reach who go out of their way to make every guest’s stay a reason to return.
Our children and grandchildren have spent many vacations with us on the island and are looking forward to returning next month. It is one of our greatest thrills to know that we have introduced so many special people to Ocean’s Reach and that they share in its magic the same as we do. Whether one needs a few days to renew energy, escape from the cruelty of winter, or simply give oneself a change of scenery, Ocean’s Reach on Sanibel Island is the perfect spot. So, to give Frommer’s its due, when referring to Sanibel Island as an “idyllic haven,” I second that.
