(This review is for a Sunday night stay in January 2012.) We love St Augustine and stopped overnight on the way home from Ft Lauderdale. We know of fancier places to stay, but we just came off a cruise and were not interested in spending loads of $ - we just wanted a clean bed for the night within walking distance of the historic area. We booked a king suite on the 3rd floor for $72 plus $5 for a parking pass. (Paying to park might seem strange, but parking areas in historic districts are few and pricey. Because this hotel is convenient to downtown, many tourists have tried using the hotel parking lot for free. The hotel is merely reserving the right to park for hotel guests; if you arrive by cab, you do not pay the fee.) The lobby area was a little dark, with a tropical blue sky mural on a low ceiling but little overhead lighting. However, the desk is near the door and the staff on duty were always receptive and helpful. The King suite included a bed with side tables, sofa, coffee table, 4-drawer dresser with a rather large (old) TV, a desk with a lamp and work chair, plenty of outlets, free wireless, an adequate closet, and a microwave/coffee/fridge corner. The room was clean and seemed recently re-carpeted and painted. The bedding was the old style, with one sheet, a blanket and the requisite synthetic-fill bedspread. The mattress also seemed fairly new. (I always check the seams for bedbugs and found no evidence of the critters.) There is no thermostat in the room; it has the old-fashioned wall-mounted heat/air unit with dials. However, the bathroom was a marvel and seemed to belong to a much nicer hotel. It had a beautiful granite sink and counter, new paint, a deep tub with strong Waterpik shower head and a bowed-out curtain rod, and high toilet. Even the towels reminded me of those in much more expensive hotels, plush and absorbent. Breakfast is included in the rate, with the typical cereal bar, instant oatmeal, juice, pastries, waffle maker and coffee. The breakfast area is adjacent to the lobby and has the same rather dark feel to it, but it is clean and the staff are helpful. The hotel is in a safe area and within easy walking distance to historic St Augustine with its amazing fort, preserved homes and shopping, as well as other area attractions (Ripley's Believe It or Not, Fountain of Youth, etc). While the hotel is nothing fancy, it is clean, safe, and pretty comfortable. A family of four (or five if the kids are small!) could stay comfortably in a king suite with the fold-out couch for not a lot of moolah, and be able to walk comfortably to loads of attractions. The beach is a short drive across the bridge, and local golf is supposed to be amazing. (I don't golf much, but that's what my husband says.) If you're looking for a destination hotel or bathe in Perrier, this place would not be for you. But if you just want to stay in a safe, clean downtown location without breaking the bank, you can't go wrong here.
