We just got back from such an incredible vacation at Club Med that I felt compelled to write my first trip advisor review to rave about this hidden gem! We were traveling with our 2 daughters - a 2-year-old and a 4-month-old - so we were looking for a vacation option where we could relax / have fun AND our kids would have fun / be secure. Club Med turned out to be the perfect solution - we will definitely be back! I checked out all of the TripAdvisor reviews before picking it, so I want to 'give back' by writing a comprehensive review from the lens of an active family with 2 young kids - bear with me...
The highlights, in summary:
- The staff is absolutely amazing (we saw for ourselves what everyone was raving about!),
- Fantastic childcare for kids as young as 4-months (Eleni really made our vacation a delight!)
- No need to bring all of the kids' gear - they have most of it (strollers, cribs, high chairs, disposable bibs, jarred baby food, etc, etc, all included; extra cost for airport transfers, but they have car seats)
- Delicious food that is a great combination of gourmet/European but practical for families
- Activities for my husband and me that enabled us to be active/indulge in sports but still relax and hang out with the kids when we wanted to.
Now for the detail...
The staff: always mentioned as a highlight and now I know why. Many of the staff we interacted with are called GO's (a Club Med-ism - Gentil Organisateur - essentially, staff that are on short-term contracts at a property to live there, run activities and mingle with the guests; typically post-college with a penchant for making a guest's vacation fun!). The Chef du Village (boss of the property), Lionel, exuded the culture of the place. We always saw him around, whether bringing fresh fruit to us by the pool-side, or jumping in to hit tennis balls with us. Honestly, it took me a while to realize that he was the 'big boss' and not one of the fun-loving GOs! Merci pour tous, Lionel!
Childcare: for kids under 4 yrs old, the childcare is an additional cost ($85 a day but you can do a half-day for half the cost). This was the only 'additional' cost we incurred during our stay. While you can pre-pay upon booking, we opted to go 'a la carte' because it wasn't too busy and we wanted to ensure our kids would enjoy it before committing. My 4-month-old infant was immediately 'adopted' by the incredible Eleni - who I trusted immensely (very important for an infant!). A bunch of other folks raved about her in reviews, and now I see why - she was the highlight of our stay! (we miss you already, girl!) Eleni came to eat dinner with us many nights and created an impromptu dance party for the toddlers a few times during our stay! The joy on my daughter's face while dancing is one of my fondest memories of our trip! We also loved Stella (she's extremely committed to keeping the infants safe and cared for - thank you for constantly putting my mind at ease, Stella!), and Lady (always had a smile and was very reassuring as I was initially nervous to leave my infant in childcare). As for my 2-year-old, she went to 'camp' (called Petit Club) and LOVED it! She played, swam, did arts & crafts, danced and ate well in the Petit Club. A big 'shout out' to Luna - she was such a ray of sunshine to my daughter and took such great care of her. Having both kids so well taken care of enabled my husband and me to enjoy some relaxation without feeling guilty about being away from the kids.
They supply kids gear: we paid for a transfer to/from the airport (expensive but less than a rental car if you stay for a week) which included a car seat. We were greeted with 2 clean strollers that were 'ours' for the duration of our stay (we only needed one - we brought one for our infant), our room had 2 cribs with clean sheets, a baby bath for our infant, the dining area has plenty of high chairs and disposable bibs that the staff would bring to us, and the dining room had a room with baby food needs (disposable plates, bowls, jarred Gerber baby food, etc) - all of this is included in your stay. Angel, who turned out to be our 'regular' waiter at our outdoor table, was phenomenal - always smiling, joking and making sure we had everything we needed (a big feat, given our 2-year-old's needs!).
The food and dining experience is fantastic. Buffet-style and very gourmet but with plenty of options for us AND our 2-year-old (again, an impressive feat!). Their famous chocolate bread was available at every meal and was the reason we tried to stay active during the day...! Big shout-out to Chef Don who served up some delicious proteins and always had a smile!
The activities for my husband and me were a highlight and one of the key reasons we'd come back - tennis, trapeze, sailing, just to name a few! Tennis... We'd play tennis every morning (we took the 9am intermediate lesson and played in the 4pm round robin, all part of the all-inclusive). Alain is the reason my husband and I have a better tennis game and Gary kept us equipped with the best racquets everyday! Trapeze... I absolutely loved the trapeze. The team was so very friendly and so patient at teaching new tricks / alleviating any fear! Carolina, Nick, Carl and Pat were fantastic coaches (I miss you guys and wish I had braved the trapeze earlier in my trip!). Sailing... We even learned to sail - something I've always wanted to do (Joe make the complexity of sailing seem simple). Swimming/relaxation... The pools were nice - kids' mini water park-like pool, a lap pool, and 2 other pools (including the gorgeous infinity pool for adults - very relaxing!). Two of them aren't heated but we had really nice weather so it didn't matter. My initial apprehension toward Sandpiper Bay was the location (on a river, not the ocean) but it didn't matter at all once we were there. They had a little beach for my 2-yr-old to build sandcastles, and with all of the amenities, we didn't miss the ocean.
Based on my extensive research before the trip, we chose it because it seemed to be the best value for money to satisfy the needs of adults and kids in an all-inclusive manner, and it really proved to be true (our other option was Beaches in Turks & Caicos but it was over 2x the cost). As most people mention, the rooms are decent but not luxurious (we weren't looking for luxury with our kids) - most of all, they were clean, simple and kid-friendly.
Note the theme(!): If you have young kids and you're relatively active, it's a PERFECT fit. Best of all for Americans, it's a simple flight to Florida (we flew to West Palm Beach airport) instead of schlepping to the Caribbean (short, direct flight for us with no need for passports). We were sad to leave and will DEFINITELY be back!!
