“camping”

Not a bad experience if you don't mind parking your rig in an open treeless area, somewhat like a big parking lot with grass between sites. Absolutely no privacy. I didn't take any pictures of my view of the dumpster but I am thinking about taking such kind of pictures during my future camp outings and posting them online so that the 'real' look of the campground can be seen, rather than all the bells and whistles that are online at ra and rc. The Gulf is absolutely gorgeous, the sand dunes real beauties and the birds are enchanting.

Room Tip: If you do want privacy this is not the campground for you. In fact, it's not easy to find such...

“Beautiful setting!”

Beautiful campground. Electric and water in good condition. Paved pads. Bath houses weren't perfect, but I didn't spend much time there anyway. Camp store that sold beer. Short walk to the beach. Couldn't figure out a way to use the inflatable boat though. They have a small ramp behind the visitors center but wouldn't let me store the boat anywhere.

“Fort Pickens State Park, Gulf Breeze, Florida”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 August 2011

Fort Pickens was amazing. Much history and amazing it is still there. Very impressed and really enjoyed the tour. Would recommend highly. I really enjoyed walking around all the buildings and batteries.

We camped in a pop up camper in Loop E since that is all that was left and was very satisfied. Low noise, not that busy at all. Clean. Bathrooms clean.

You could not walk to beach. No chairs or umbrellas are for rent on beach, you need to carry all of this yourself and with little kids that is a little hard. Not much shade in camping areas at all. Take a canopy. Very hot in August. I would have a hard time in a tent without air conditioning.

There was a public beach, Langdon beach and you do not need to walk that far down to beach. Right off parking lot. Restroom, shaded picnic tables on deck and wash off showers. Park and beach right there. More crowds at this beach in Fort Pickens but still secluded compared to public beaches in Pensacola.

Lots of secluded beaches along road in this state park. Park and take wooden walking trails down to beach. Very secluded. No facilities at these beaches. Longer walk but you will have a section to yourself for privacy if needed. Well worth little walk if you want privacy.

You have the bay on one side and the gulf beach one side which was great, the best of both worlds for us since my one son and hubby likes to fish then my other son and me likes the waves. We hiked a trail from Loop E campsite to bay side but it was not nice. Ants along way and water stunk so we drove to pier every other time. Very nice area. We seen more people over here then on the gulf beach sides swimming. Of course you also get more ocean critters over by pier since most are fishing. Kids trying to catch big crabs and at night the tiny sand crabs everywhere.

The gulf waters where very clear. I was surprised. Nothing like Caribbean waters but clear for being this high up in Florida. Some jellyfish but not overpowering. Seen alot of sting rays. Manta ray far out. Dolphins only one day.

This place is very secluded so if u do not want to be by crowds I really recommend. The cabins where nothing great but I am looking into them for next time for the seclusion of this place. Even just going to the beach here for the day is worth for the privacy. But you have to like seclusion and nothing around to like it here. Nothing has easy access or no stores or restaurants. Bring your own food and drinks since no vendors on beaches here.
Stayed 1 week. $8.00 park fee for 7 days. Camping fee i think was $20-$25 a night, very cheap.

LOVED IT!

“Still Beautiful”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 July 2011

We stayed at Ft. Pickens with our Grand children for the 4th of July weekend and Blue Angels weekend (July 8-9). My wife is a native of the area and since moving 20 years ago we visit every now and then. This is our first camping trip in a travel trailer.

The good:
Loop A is by far the best loop. It is smaller, closer to the beach and has more shaded campsites. The beach is, as it has always been, beautiful! This area is particularly nice as there are no crowds, and the people that are there are well behaved. Each campsite has an asphalt slab that accomodates vitually any rig with plenty of space for your stuff, it doesn't feel too crowded even though the campground was completely full. There is a campstore that has all the essentials, but beware the prices are really high. The fort is about 1 mile and has guided and self guided tours. Although we just walked around for awhile as we've been there before, it is a very interesting place and well worth 3-4 hours. There are additional batteries scattered around the fort that are well worth a look.

The Bad:
The bathrooms and showers leave a lot to be desired. They are small, there is no fan or supplies, so you need to bring hand soap and towel. The shower facility is seperated from the toilet, so you must shower in one room and then shave etc. in another.
We usually stay at state parks, which allow you to enter the park without paying the entrance fee while camping, not here. It's $8.00 per vehicle, although it is a one week pass. We left and returned on the evening prior to our leaving, and they still charged the $8.00. They make very sure that you understand the rules and seem to enforce them. There is a $280 fine for exceeding the 20mph speed limit and they are quick to remind you of it.

If you go:
Make sure that you visit the Naval Aviation Museum and Fort Barrancas.
Pegleg Pete's is a good place to eat, but there will be a wait, although never as long as they quote you, downstairs has less of a wait, but it is very loud when the band plays. Hemmingways is a very good and relatively inexpensive place to eat at the boardwalk. Although we didn't go, The Grand Marlin gets good reviews and the menu looks good. Take a trip over the bridge to McGuires Irish pub for the best steaks and burgers around. Be aware that the portions are HUGE, they have a great Sunday Brunch. Visit the boardwalk for the standard beachy shops and have a Bushwacker at Capt'n fun or walk across the street for the original at the Sandshaker (a local dive). The campground is about 7 mile from Pensacola Beach proper, but the speed limit is max 35, min. 20 it takes awhile to get there. There is a $1.00 toll to get onto the beach.

Overall, this is great place to go and some of the most beautiful beaches you'll ever see!

“Excellant!!!”

My husband and myself stayed here for one night in a pop-up camper. We had a wonderful stay. The campground & restrooms are very clean. If you forgot anything there is shopping close by. Peg Leg Pete's restaurant is a must. Food is excellant and the service great. But, PLEASE don't go to the Dock Restuaurant right on the water. The food is TERRIBLE!!!! The fort is worth touring. The beach is BEAUTIFUL & a short distance from the campground. We would definitely go back again if we are ever in the area.
