“Prior stays were good - Not this time.”

We have stayed at Emerald Isle at least 5 times over the past 7 or so years. We lived on Pensacola Beach for many years, too. Always booked a 2 bedroom unit at Emerald Isle when visiting. Location right on Gulf of Mexico beach with nice balconies. Restaurants available near building and ample parking. This time was different. The 2-bedroom condo on the 15th floor seemed smaller than those we had rented previously. There was a tiny TV in the master bedroom but it was mounted at ceiling level. TV in living room was in a cabinet that had doors which did not fold back and the lack of a swivel shelf made the very old and heavy TV difficult to see from anywhere other than the uncomfortable living room sofa. There was a flat screen TV in the second bedroom (twin beds were the only furniture in that room). Upholstered furniture was old and uncomfortable and needs replacement. Dining table and breakfast bar provided ample seating. Beds were ALL old and uncomfortable. My husband had problems sleeping in the king bed and discovered that the twin beds in the second bedroom were also uncomfortable. Housekeeping was terrible-particularly bathrooms, which looked like the floor had been mopped but there was dirt and grime where the walls met the floors and hair floating around, too. I stay in condos frequently and have owned several in the past. I have never found one with so few basic necessities available upon arrival. Very limited amount of toilet tissue, no dishwasher tablets (not even ONE for the first day),no laundry detergent sampler sizes for even one wash, low quality bar soap in bathrooms. No paper towels. Linens and towels were in need of replacement and blanket on king bed was shabby and looked like it needed washing. It also smelled of cigarette smoke even though this was a non-smoking unit. Very disappointed with the condo unit, which was listed on VRBO and also managed by a professional management company that we had used before without problems. I booked through the management company and was not warned about the condition of this condo. The weekly rate was reasonable but not for the unit we stayed in. A bargain is not always a bargain here. In the future, I would probably not use a "vacation resort by owner" listing without questioning the owner about the condition of the unit but felt that the management company would not represent a unit that was in the condition this one was in. The photos on the web site looked very attractive, too! One other concern -and this one applies to the building-was security. Key cards are not used here. Previous units we rented had a chain lock on the door. This one did not. Since it was January, only 40 condo units were occupied. Anyone with a key could enter easily since the door key and deadbolt used the same key. There are outside corriders on all floors of this building. The windows to the second bedroom (children's room) opened on to these corriders and we were not comfortable leaving the windows open at night. We stayed 6 nights and left for the 7th night in a hotel, which was clean and comfortable with nightly rates that were similar to what we ended up paying after cleaning fees and check-in and miscellaneous other costs were added. We will not return to Emerald Isle for our next stay.

“Great place to stay with family”

Stayed with family as we got our daughter settled into UWF and Emerald Isle was an excellent choice. Condo was huge and had everthing we needed. Pools are gorgeous with a nice hot tub that all looks onto the beach! Loved having a full kitchen and washer/dryer. Being able to make coffee in the morning and pina coladas at night and look off the balcony was priceless. Felt very safe and meet nice people at pool that are return guests. For the price of the condo that contains several bedrooms you can save enough money to go on another trip!!!

Good restaurants - Italian across the street - Leela's (SP?), Fish House, Carabbas, McGuires.

Bring a cord for free internet, it is not wireless.

We rented VRBO 215685 and the owner Scott gave us a great price and was very accomodating. Many of the rental units charge so much in extras such as tax and cleaning fees, be sure to ask for an all inclusive price when getting quotes. We love VRBO and this unit.

“Perfect Beach Vacation experience! Loved Emerald Isle!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 April 2008

Emerald Isle is managed by JME Vacations who rep something like 80% of the units there. They are wonderful to work with , never had a problem with unexpected fees... and their office is right there at the building (by the Circle K) . We have stayed there several times now.

The key is to look at the units on the JME website, and see how they are furnished - great site. We love unit 1201 - a 3 bedroom with a beachy white, blue and yellow scheme, and windows that wrap around the unit. The unit we stayed in had Ralph Lauren, Trisha Guild, Pottery Barn linens, Dansk dishes, Lexington furniture, beautiful artwork...We just Loved it!

This building seems to cater to families, often multiple generations. Lots of restaurants are a short walk away as well as a Bagel shop, pizza, seafood, Subway, and an ice cream parlor directly across the street.

We love that it is directly on the beach, fun to walk, especially at dusk when the kids love to go out with their flashlights to catch little sand crabs.

We have celebrated the 4th of July there several years. You can stand on the front balcony and see the fireworks at the beach along with the ones in the city! We have seen the Blue Angels from the beach side balcony numerous times, the preshow practices, and the actual shows. And I have to mention how amazing it is to watch the schools of fish, sea turtles, etc from the balcony! Perfect view!

We have gone other places, but our family all agree that Pensacola and especially Emerald Isle, feels like a home away from home for us all. We just love it.

  • Liked — The views of the beach, and the beach itself!
  • Disliked — Hmmm...not really anything. Just too short!

“Can't beat the view!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 March 2008

My family has stayed at Emerald Isle twice now and have another stay planned early this summer. The rooms are all ocean front and nothing beats ending the evening on the balcony with a drink listening to the surf! Conveniently located to the Boardwalk area for food & fun. Or a short drive to great oysters at Peg Leg Pete's on Ft Pickens Rd.

I read some complaints about check in, poor supplies, etc... my HINT - don't rent through Portofino, but through VRBO.com. Many of these are managed by local Realty companies or else owners who are local to the area. This gives a much more 'personal' service at check in, etc... and you get to know exactly the unit you get. I.e. what floor, size of beds in the rooms, decor, etc... Also, depending on the time of year you can often get a better rate! We've rented both ways and I definitely think this is the way to go!

One more HINT - there is an outrageous tax on anything purchased on the Island. If you are going to buy beach gear, groceries, etc... suggest you Shop in Gulf Breeze (just across the toll bridge) where things will be cheaper.

“Not at all what we expected... much less in fact.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 March 2008

LOCATION: Very nice. Ocean front. Great views. Center of "town".

ROOM: Okay. Not wonderful, not horrible. We were only provided 1/2 - 3/4 roll of toilet paper in each restroom (2), with no extra rolls. Only given 6 bath towels for 4 people for 4 nights. Not one extra anywhere. Beds were very very cheap... on wheels.. twins and the king in master bedroom. Sheets were cheap, not comfortable at all. Colors in rooms were horrid. Front door doesn't have a deadbolt, nor does it close all the way.. which means on windy nights (like we had) the most awful LOUD howling noise coming thru door which is directly in front of guest bedroom (kids room). Couldn't be quieted with towels placed around door. We were provided no laundry detergent... only an empty bottle. Mish mash of utensils and cups/glasses. Older appliances. Cheap motel soap in restrooms. Outdoor corridors leading to rooms. For an upper scale (which I thought) room, this feels more motel like. I wouldn't stay here again, nor would I recommend staying here.

POOLS/GYM: We didn't use the gym so I cannot comment there. The pools (2) were okay. Water was brrrr cold, and one pool that was supposed to be warm was only a few degrees warmer than the "cold" pool. Hot tub was large, but filled with adults. There were only a few smaller children during our visit. It would have been nice to have had an indoor pool to swim in during windy days, or red flags for the beach.

BEACH: Just outside the back door, and down a wooden walkway, and you're at the beach. Wonderful beach! But.... the nice wooden chairs and umbrellas.... not free for guests. If you used them.. you paid extra... either hourly or by the day. The fees were costly... better to bring your own chairs.

BLUE ANGELS: When the Angels fly.. they are no where near the beach. They practice over the base, and when they "do" fly over the beach, it's for the air show. We didn't see one Blue Angel anywhere near the beach... and only saw two fly when we were just outside the naval base.

RESTAURANTS: Several to choose from, but during busy time of year, expect to either wait a long time, or be ignored. We actually left one restaurant because after waiting a good amount of time, we were not approached by one single employee for drink orders, nor given a menu, nor told to expect a wait. Several people looked quite irritated actually. Most of our meals ended up being eaten at restaurants over the bridge. (Toll back onto Pensacola Beach is $1.00 each time, so have some dollars handy).

NOISE: Other than wind noise which I already explained, we weren't that bothered by noises from pools or guests.. we were high enough up that the noise was not obtrusive. The other couple who were with us had some unruly teens outside their door, and had to go outside to quiet them.

  • Liked — Location, beach front.
  • Disliked — Noise, cheap beds.
