I'll begin by saying the actual Emerald Isle Resort isn't terrible- our negative experience was with the actual condo unit we stayed in: 1306 rented by Emerald Coast Destinations. Let me start with the general resort: As others have mentioned, the parking at Emerald Isle has need for improvement. If parking in one of the three levels underneath the building, be prepared to have some trouble turning around. There is no turnaround area, and luckily we were always able to use an open space to turn around our vehicle. You must back out of the deck. The parking across the street is conveniently located, and the walk across the street via the covered walkway was fine. Be aware, however, that the walkway leaks when raining. Additionally, there are two pools, but they are very small. The "lounging" area around the pools is also small, and there are not as many chairs as I would expect at such a large place. The balconies of the units are very large, which was nice! There are four conveniently situated elevators that were always readily available. The staff at Emerald Isle could always be seen cleaning elevators, and we could tell they took pride in the overall cleanliness of the building.
Now for unit 1306- needs TLC and some deep cleaning. There was an offensive odor upon entering the unit. We couldn't place where it was coming from, but we assumed the dirty carpets in the bedrooms. The tile felt sandy and had food stains on it from the previous tenants. It was obvious that the floor had not been mopped, just swept with a broom. Bob's response to this (rep. for Emerald Coast Destinations) was "you're at the beach," when I expressed concern over the dirty tile. Additionally, the carpets looked as if they had never been cleaned, much less vacuumed. There was so much dust sticking to the air vents and return vents that we were disgusted. That is an obvious sign that air conditioning filters need changing. There was about 1/4" of dust on the ceiling fans, baseboards, and dust on furniture too, along with hair and a mysterious sticky stain on the windowsill of the bedroom. There was even dust sticking to the bathroom wall, which was pretty gross to look at while taking a shower in a shower with a mildew-laden shower curtain. Torn and missing slats of vertical blinds, a missing drain plug in the shower, and ripped/stained towels further disgusted us. Luckily we were able to visit Target to purchases towels/washcloths/bath rugs to take home. Don't count on any supplies being provided: no trash bags (except the one in the trashcan), soap, (except the one little one in the bathroom), paper towels, toilet paper, etc. PLAN on making a trip to the store as soon as you arrive, as you will not have basic supplies to sustain you for even a day.
The bottom line is this: The condo has decent furniture and is a good value, but it needs TLC in the cleaning and maintenance department. It is apparent that the owner (Emerald Coast Destinations?) doesn't value cleanliness and certainly doesn't provide great customer service when hearing complaints from well-paying customers. I will say that Lisa was nice to oblige our request for the condo to be cleaned again, while Bob seemed perturbed that we would make such a request and went so far as to tell my husband not to contact him the following day (Sunday) if there continued to be a problem. By the way the cleaning company....consisted of one guy who showed up with a small plastic grocery sack of supplies and a vinyl bag of what we assumed to be linens...NO mop, clorox, or other supplies that a professional cleaning company would use to sanitize a unit to a pristine condition. There was only a bucket, broom, and dustpan, and a vacuum cleaner in the condo, so it wasn't like there were plenty of supplies inside for him to use. Look for another unit that has owners who provide lots of TLC for their condo and are happy to leave it in a pristine condition for each and every tenant!!
