“Overall a comfortable stay, but it's a question of how you want to spend your money.”
My partner and I decided to stay for a much earned rest after exhibiting at the PGA Golf Show in Orlando. In total we stayed 8 nights.
We are from the UK and went by Trip Advisor reviews in deciding on staying at the PGA National.Knowing nothing about the area, we booked on line from the comfort of our home and went through hotels.com.
We are both keen golfers and wanted to play both courses in the area as awell as the PGA courses.
On arriving late evening we were pleasantly happy with our room which was spacious and comfortable. The Ironwood bar was super for a late supper and drink. The staff were very helpful.
After a good night sleep, we went to the coffee shop for breakfast and sat in the warmth on the terrace- lovely. Tip no 1, you don't need to pay extra for breakfast. The coffee shop has everything you need at a fraction of the cost of breakfast rate.
We then headed to the pro shop to book golf. Here was the biggest shock.Because we hadn't booked hotel through PGA but instead through a deal, the golf was not available at guest rates. Therefore, the fee for the championship course was $400 PER PERSON! ie $800 for a game of golf for 2 people! Even the non championship courses were $200. Interestingly, I had emailed the hotel prior to our stay asking about a golf package- I did not get a reply to my email.
Last year when we played at La Manga, we were offered a speaciasl 6 round golf package- no such thing at the PGA.
Tip no 2, if you want to play golf you have to book with your accommodation- however we comaperd the cost and it would have been 3 times more- is it worth it?
We played 4 rounds of golf in 7 days using booknow.com (you can look up and book the night before) and playing super golf courses in the area- Ironhorse, Abacoa, only 15 mins from the resort and easy to find. In the end, we payed out for 8 green fees and the full cost was $510- a fraction of what it would have cost to play PGA! And we suspect better quality golf courses, championship course aside.
Tip no 3, book on line other courses in the area- a beeter use of your money.
Overall our stay was comfortable except for 3 restless nights. One caused by a noisy room fridge which we had disconnected, another rude awakening at 5.45am by a false firew alarm that went on for 15 mins and finally calling security to sort out rowdy neighbours at 3am,
On checking out, we made a complaint about the above and were deducted uor resort fee for the week which seemed fair enough compensation.
We left overall happy but the golf situation is perplexing and shortsighted on the PGA's behalf.
We would recommend the resort but as I said, you could really blow the cash if you weren'gt savvy enough.
