“Not as bad as I thought it would be”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

Hi Me and my family stayed in Days Inn Maingate last May 2011 and it wasn't really as bad as I thought it would be!

I have stayed in several Days Inn hotels before (in Asia) and I find their hotels to be nice and good value for money. And so, as soon as I saw their $28 per night deal in Agoda, i booked it. I thought it was good deal. I didn't even bother to check this hotel in TA before booking it.
After few days, which is like a couple of weeks before we were due to arrive in Orlando, I looked up this hotel in TA and was suprised (not in a good way) by most of the negative
reviews I've read. I even started to regret booking this hotel but I can't cancel it, it would mean
wasting some money as i booked 3 rooms (stupid, i know).
We finally arrived in Orlando and saw the hotel for the first time. It was indeed near Universal
Studious, but not that near. The location is not really bad but it will be hard to get in and out
the area if you don't have a car. I was already expecting the worst, so seeing how unkept the
outside of the hotel looked like did not bother me at all. The check in was fast, within 10
mins we got the keys to our rooms. The rooms, well they are pretty basic, the bedsheets are outdated but they all looked clean and fresh. No bed bugs! The bathrooms were outdated but
they were also clean. Yes, the towels were really thin and small but it's a $28 per night
room! So i guess that was ok. All in all, our stay was okay. We slept comfortably on all 3 nights. The only thing I didn't really like about the hotel is that there is no place to eat, atleast none that is appealing enough. The breakfast they offer is quite pathetic, we have to drop by
wendy's or Burger King to get something to eat. Good thing we rented a van. So if you don't have a car, don't stay here. You'll go hungry!

“Very disgusting.”

You definitely get what you pay for at this hotel. It is cheap compared with the other hotels in the area and is within walking distance of Universal Studios. However, this hotel is truly disgusting. The sheets and towels were stained very badly and the shower curtain had mildew all over it. The maids did not always leave towels either, and we had to go to the front desk for more. It was also not possible to close the bathroom door because it looked like it would break off the hinge. There was also a problem with ants in the room. We probably ended up killing about three or four dozen of them during our stay. Also, every night between 6:00 and 9:00, local restaurants would slip take out menus through the door. I did not go to the swimming pool, but it appeared to be clean from a distance. The continental breakfast is NOT included with every room, and was not worth $3.75 for toast, cereal, and juice. The gift shop on site has a limited selection and has nothing special worth of interest. If you're looking for a hotel near Universal Studios, maybe look at the Holiday Inn next door.

Room Tip: There are many rooms that are located in the back of the hotel and will require you to drive around...

“Certainly an experience...”

First of all, this place is cheap so keep your expectations realistic. Really, how nice are you going to get when you're paying so little? However, even having said that, there are many issues that I have with the hotel/motel which I would not expect to have encountered. Upon arriving, I was given a room that the key cards did not work for. When I returned to reception to complain however, the staff member was very helpful and immediately moved me to another room, even making sure we got one on the first floor ( 2nd in American terms) as we were all females at my request. Normally this wouldn't be an issue but my taxi driver had been less than complimentary about the area and quite vocal about the the supposedly prevalent gang culture. However, I have to say that even though we were using public transport and out after dark, we saw no evidence of this and I never felt particularly unsafe. Regarding the second room, we had many issues. The tv did not initially work due to a very dubious looking wall plug with loose wires, the lights were faulty and the bathtub did not drain. Furthermore, while I was in the shower refreshing frm my journey, other people tried to enter the room using key cards given to them for that room. Again i complained at reception where I was met with profuse apologies and a handyman was sent t fix the problems which in fairness he did very quickly. Generally speaking the rooms are a bit shabby but given the price i was to overly surprised. The pool was nice and warm and the drinks at Tiki Mike's pool bar were pleasant. Almost all the staff were helpful and informative. Breakfast is fairly unexciting consisting of toast, 2 choices of cereal and hard-boled eggs and porridge. Waffles can be purchased for an extra $1.50 and there is free tea, coffee and 3 juices. It gets very repetitive but fills a gap and you can always make peanut butter and jam sandwiches t take out. The park shuttle is a useful service, but is normally very busy and leaves early in the morning, around 7am. There are shuttles to disney's Epcot, sea world and universal, although universal is only a 10-15minute easy walk. The nearest big grocery store is about a 2 mile walk and tHere is a small fridge in the room, convenient for eating in. We were also bombarded with pizza leaflets every day, which was cheap and easy and delivered t the room. However, there was one major issue with our stay. On returning from disney around 7 one evening, we found that our room had been left open by the cleaner. Luckily we had all valuables in the safe by this was still unacceptable. The reception staff member on duty was very apologetic and gave us a did not charge us for that night in the end. However, I am still awaiting an email from the general manager and will pursue this further. In addition, the staff booked a taxi foes but we had many problems and they did not seem overly keen to help. Overall, it's a cheap hotel and the standard is as such enter slyly, but in futures due to the staff negligence I would not stay here again nor recommend it to a friend. I am sure many other people do t experience these problems and it may just have been unfortunate but alas, it has marred my opinion of the place.

Room Tip: Get one in the lobby building and you might be able to get wifi, otherwise it's only In the lobb...

“Cheap, clean, honest”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 December 2011

Good hotel, very simple, very cheap, ideal for low budget trips. We were four people, everything worked perfectly (bathroom, check-in, check-out, cleaning), the breakfast was simple but sufficient for our needs, included in the price, the room was clean and calm. We had a small fridge, and could have a microwave for USD 10/day (we declined). Purchase water bottles, the fridge comes empty. There is no wireless in the room, just at the reception and breakfast areas. Very close to Universal, you can go there walking if you wish, but remember you will be quite tired from the Universal atractions to return walking at night... I definitely recommend this hotel to others.

Room Tip: We had a room on the first floor, as we had a lot of cases I think it was better; rooms on the secon...

“Fit my needs perfectly!!!”

I needed a hotel with refrigerator, bus/walking to Universal & stores, & inexpensive. This hotel fit the bill for the most excellent vacation. Hotel staff very friendly, grounds looked nice, room was clean/bed comforable and everything worked, the bus stop (bus route 21) was a 2 minute walk, and Universal was a very pleasant 20 minute walk. The free shuttle (actually it's a full size bus) left later in the morning than I like to arrive at the park but it was there and available for my return back to the hotel. Restaurant and store on premises, internet available in the lobby for those with a computer, and a large heated pool. Walgreens & many fast food places was a 10 minute walk or take the bus. I am already planning my next visit and will be returning to Days Inn Orlando Universal Maingate.
