We were at WDW for the marathon in early January 2012 and wanted to stay at a villa so we could cook for ourselves. The BoardWalk Villas were perfect for us. The resort was close to EPCOT which was where the starting line for the marathon was located. The villa was very comfortable and we had plenty of room to spread out and relax. Full kitchen, small round dinette table & chairs, breakfast bar area, sofa bed in the living area, flat screen TVs in both the living area and the bedroom. While we were there Disney was "testing" out free internet service. It was fine during the day when most folks were at the parks but a bit slower in the evenings. It was nice to have a washer and dryer in the room so I could wash the sweaty running clothes plus we didn't have to pack as much for the trip. They only give you one box of detergent, though, so bring some with you if you anticipate several loads or else you have to pay $1 for each packet at the gift shop. The decor is understated from a Disney standpoint. Our room was a looooong hike from the lobby but that was okay with us; it was nice and quiet. The bathroom is split into one separate room with the toilet and the shower plus a pedestal sink and another room connected with the bedroom that has a vanity sink and a large whirlpool tub (and the walk-in closet is at the back of this part of the bathroom). My one complaint about the villa itself is that you can't completely close off this part of the bathroom from the sleeping area. It would have been nice to have a grocery store nearby. The gift shop has some very basic stuff: a few frozen food items, some soups, oatmeal, cereal, milk, juice, mac & cheese. If you want to visit a real grocery store you'll need a car or take a pricey taxi. There is a business center with FedEx service that is open every day but it is not 24H. Both EPCOT and Hollywood Studios are within walking distance of the resort but HS is a much longer walk. (If you're running the marathon or 1/2 marathon, though, you CANNOT walk to the starting area because the back entrance to the World Showcase is NOT open at that hour. You must take the special event bus service.) Both of these parks are accessible by boat as well. The other parks and Downtown Disney are reached by bus. Several restaurants, a small bakery and a confections shop plus a couple of freestanding food booths are located on the Boardwalk but there is no cafeteria-type dining like at AKL or at the All Stars (the two other resorts at which we've stayed). There's a very good (although expensive) Japanese restaurant at the neighboring Swan hotel. The fitness room looked fantastic but I didn't actually use it. There seemed to be an attendant there most of the day who kept things neat and wiped down. If you're a runner, the boardwalk and path around the lake is perfect for running -- just watch out for guests in speeding surrey carts! We did not swim at the pools because it wasn't quite warm enough in January to do so but the slide looked like it would be a lot of fun for kids.
We were very pleased with our stay at BoardWalk Villas. Still, compared to Animal Kingdom Lodge - Jambo House, I still prefer AKL for its ambience and food (Boma is my favorite restaurant in all of WDW).
