I stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn Orlando at SeaWorld during a recent business trip. The hotel is beautiful, decorated perfectly for it's proximity to SeaWorld (just a block away) with a lovely tropical fish tank in the lobby. We arrived fairly early (around 2 p.m.) and were told our rooms were ready. My colleague is a higher-level Hilton HHonors Member, and was given a room on the 7th floor. My room was on the 2nd. Upon entering my room, I was immediately overwhelmed by the smell of stale cigarette smoke. The room itself LOOKED beautiful, but I decided immediately that I could not stay there. I went to the front desk and asked if I could please change rooms because mine smelled of cigarette smoke. I was told that I had been given a smoking room because it was not specified on the reservation. (Note: I didn't make the reservation, but didn't realize that smoking rooms still existed.) They were very accommodating and said that I could certainly be moved to a non-smoking room, but it may be a couple of hours before it was ready. So, I hunkered down in the lobby with my bags. The leather sofa was very comfortable and the WiFi was strong. I ended up having to change clothes in the ladies' room because my room wasn't ready before I had to leave for the convention, but the front desk staff were very friendly and apologetic.
When I returned around 8:30 p.m., I had been given a beautiful nonsmoking room on the 8th (top) floor overlooking Sea World. The room itself was beautiful and immaculately clean. There was a mini-fridge, a microwave, a coffee maker and Wi-Fi in the room. The accommodations were great. The only complaint I have about the room was that the air conditioner was unusually loud. It woke me up every time it went on during the first night. The second night, I just turned the temperature up so it didn't go on as often.
On the second night, I was relaxing in my room when I heard fireworks outside. I opened my curtains and realized that I had a perfect view of Sea World's fireworks. My room obviously faced east, because I also had a great view of the sunrise.
The only other "problem" that I encountered was in the restaurant. We had complimentary breakfast because of my colleague's HHonors status. Some of the breakfast (eggs, bacon, homefries, donuts) was good and fresh, others (breakfast burrito and danish) were a little stale. The second morning, the restaurant was crowded and our waitress had disappeared. I was ready for more coffee and noticed that there was a self-service coffee station just outside the restaurant. I decided to fill my cup myself. Big mistake. I was immediately scolded by one of the waiters who told me that, "No, no, no! You can't do that!" I replied, "I can't get myself coffee?," to which he nastily replied, "only if you're going to pay for it!" There was NO sign on the coffee at the time. (I noticed that they put one up later as I was leaving for the conference.) I thought that was a bit rude. Apparently, the coffee that I was filling my cup with was Starbucks (which I really couldn't have cared less about - I just wanted coffee) and you have to pay extra for that. I just thought that the situation could have been handled a little better. The rest of the staff was very friendly and helpful.
I would highly recommend this property for it's great location to Sea World and the convention center and for it's lovely accommodations; however, I strongly advise non-smokers to request a non-smoking room upon booking and, whatever you do, don't try to fill your coffee mug from the restaurant at the Starbucks self-serve!
Room Tip: Request a non-smoking room. High floors, facing east have a great view of the Sea World fireworks an...
