North Captiva is a magical location. It was uncrowded even on a major holiday week. The occasional golf cart is the only traffic you will see (or hear) on the sandy roads and paths. The people who work there, the hardy handful of island residents, and other vacationers were all friendly and helpful. We swam in the ocean, combed the beach for sand dollars, and took our rented power boat to nearby islands. The opportunity to watch manatees, dolphins, alligators, and birds was exceptional. We had two very good group dinners in the tiny but well run Boathouse Restaurant.
All that being said, this is not a typical resort. A few key points to consider:
1. This is really on an island. You don't just hop on and off.
2. Groceries and other supplies are expensive and scarce. It is much better to do your own shopping on the mainland and bring everything over.
3. Although the people at Boats and Fun will rent you a power boat and cheerfully explain everything, boating in the area requires vigilance. The marked channels twist and turn through the sand bars and mangrove swamps. Navigational aids and buoys are missing, out of position, or (in one amusing case) installed backwards. You don't just push the throttle forward and cruise without a care.
4. The two houses we rented were comfortable and had great views but there were several things that didn't work or that were hard to figure out. Maintenance staff is cheerful but seemed overloaded.
5. What you can do and where you can go is poorly explained. We were half way through our trip before we discovered that the houses we had rented entitled us to access not only the North Captiva Island Club facilities but also the (closer to us) pool, marina, and clubhouse of the Safety Harbor Club.
6. Have a sense of humor, don't expect everything to happen exactly as advertised, slow down, and enjoy this quiet, remote, and beautiful place.
