For those that haven't worked it out yet, 'VFM' in the title stands for 'value for money', although having booked the hotel blind and relied solely on Trip Adviser brethren, we could have done worse?
We needed somewhere to stay for four nights, between arriving in the US and boarding a cruise out of Port Everglades, whilst we also wanted to avoid paying the high prices that South Beach, Miami, attracts (and the small room sizes), so I shopped around between Miami and Fort Lauderdale and came up with the Wyndham. I could see that the location, (backing onto a freeway), appeared less than picturesque, but alright and it was very reasonable, with the inclusion of a hot, cooked, breakfast and free wireless. As such, I took a gamble and booked two twin rooms for my family, (four adults and two teenagers).
On arrival, the hotel's location immediately registered as being off the beaten track, set in the middle of a business park full of offices. However, we were picking up a rental the following morning and supper, (at a fast-food Mexican chain, which was the ONLY option), was a mere five-minute walk across a couple of car parks, in the torrential rain, but we were tired, hungry and excited, so what the heck?
The first comment that I want to make, is that for the duration of our stay, the staff were excellent, with front desk happy to help in any way possible! Secondly, the foyer area was basic, but comfortable, with a small breakfast area ahead of you, but crumbs, we were only there for a few days and we didn't plan on staying in the hotel much.
Our room was on the 2nd floor and the large elevator, (there are two), always worked well and swiftly. And then we entered our rooms.
Having been to the US on numerous occasions and stayed in 3*-5* hotels, we are used to very large rooms and king beds, which led to disappointment when we found two 4'6" twin beds and a room that was large enough, just, (with an armchair to one side), but not the size that we expected. However, the benchmark is always the bathroom, we again, was average size and clean, (the base of the tub was stained), but the shower worked, so we settled down for the night, or at least until our body-clocks woke us at 03:45 in dire need of coffee!
The person in charge of breakfast arrives at 04:30, with breakfast advertised as being available from 06:00, although in all fairness, we did have the basics in our room, if you could fathom how to work the one-cup percolator and brew-up, without having woken our daughter who was still asleep....and so we waited?
Our wait saw breakfast ready from around 05:30, a very positive welcome, with the anticipation of 'a hot cooked breakfast', as advertised. However, this transpired to be a selection of cereals, defrosted croissants, sliced bread and the further advertised 'two hot items' included in the price. This is where my hunger pains faded, as parallels from M*A*S*H were drawn, with the eggs, (fried, or otherwise), looking and/or, tasting like something that Hawkeye Pierce ate under canvass. OK, nobody expected 'the breakfast lady' to cook fresh eggs for an entire hotel full of business guests, but the produce offered may have resembled the real thing, but these babies bounced off the tiled floor when dropped!
This said, if one waited, the coffee got stronger, the juice was good, the milk was cold, the staff were friendly, the wall-hanged 50" TV was welcome, the A/C in the bedrooms worked well, the beds were firm and as stated, the staff were excellent, but oh my, those 'egg things'!
OK, so I've trashed the breakfast, (or at least part of it), but in essence, the hotel was fine and scored well on other pointers, especially with access to the 'business centre', which was little more than a PC with internet access, but available at no charge.
There was a small, but clean outside pool, a small, but clean, gymnasium, (five machines), an ice machine on every floor and a 24hr 'shop', which provided essentials such as basic toiletries, Coke, other drinks, chips, (crisps) and chocolate. I mean, what else does one need? The location, albeit somewhat isolated, was a mere five-minute drive to restaurants and a small mall, (remember, you need to drive everywhere in the US) and for the very last time I need to say this again, the staff were superb!
So, if you're looking for a budget hotel, £50/$75 per night, for the room, (sleeps up to four), to include a hot breakfast - rubber eggs available at no extra charge! - then I would highly recommend the Miramar Wyndham, as you're midway between Miami and Fort Lauderdale and paying a fraction of downtown Miami.
Room Tip: Ask for a 1st floor room, (or above), facing the car park, not the freeway.
