Where to start? This hotel is a real mix of some exceptionally good things and some really unacceptable things.
The Good: Great location - souveneire shops across the street, short walk to the restaurants of Espanola Way and the shops and restaurants of Lincoln Rd Mall, short walk to the art deco district and Lumis Park. Nice pool area with a nice little poolside restaurant that served good cocktails and yummy simple food. Loved the hammocks in the palm trees, could have laid in a hammock reading for hours. Great having the beach and the board walk just outside our back gate. Pleasant staff. The lobby was not luxurious, but was inviting, pleasant and nicely scented.
Fresh orchids in the public areas were a nice touch. Breakfast was ok - basic.
The Bad: A strong ammonia smell in the hallways. Tiny, sparse rooms with no effort made with the decor. Tiny bathrooms and no place to sit toiletries, except for a tiny narrow shelf over the toilet - didn't look like a very secure place to put things unless you wanted them to end up in the toilet. No fridge. Teeny tiny run down looking elevators. No self serve laundry facilities. We had an unappealing view of an alley and the wall of the hotel next door - but, to be fair, we did not pay for any specific view.
The downright Ugly: Our toilet blocked up on each of the 3 days that we were there. Yes, we had to get maintenance to come fix it every single day. We have never, ever had to call maintenance for a blocked toilet in a hotel before.
Value: Not very good. By the time taxes were added on, it was around $200 a night. I understand that South Beach in general is overpriced, but I expected better for the price.
Impression: Lots of potential - keep the outdoors area and the lobby as they are and really sink some money into the rooms, the bathrooms, the hallways and the elevators. And, for heaven's sake, fix the plumbing! I think that this could be a beautiful boutique hotel in a great location.
We probably would have had a better impression of this hotel if we had had a room on the first floor (we wouldn't have had the ammonia smell or the dinghy hallway or elevator to mar the experience) and if the toilet had worked properly.
Also, they seemed to be a bit confused. They provided bathrobes (which normally we only see in nicer hotels), but then only provided plastic cups for drinking. They used paper plates and plastic utensils at the breakfast buffet. We had to change our own toilet paper roll (from a supply in the closet). What???
Room Tip: I would request the ground floor.
